Finish Life Rich

I read this book in 2005; what an education! Since then, I've given this book to both my daughters as presents. I decided to repurchase and reread this timeless classic again. I am finding this classic more informative and enjoyable than the first time I read it. There are no excuses in life; there are only choices!!!
The title should have been: "Smart People Finish Rich". I recommend this book to those who want to rise above financially. One does not have to end life in poverty. This is the nuts and bolts of money and finances.

Don't let divorce be your wake up call!

I saw this book in a local business publication. I went out and bought it the same week. I am the woman David writes about. I thought I had a good grasp on the finances, after all I balanced the check book, helped pay bills, knew where the money was, etc... But invest? No, my prince charming took care of that for "our" retirement, while I spent my money on daycare and the children's needs. I had a strong marriage with a husband who was looking out for us. Well, prince charming left me 4 days after my 30th birthday and 5 weeks after the birth of our second child. I am left with two children under the age of 4. I have learned soooooo much from this book. I have pitched it to all my friends that will listen. Women MUST save their OWN money. It is incredible what I have learned so far. I've signed up for 401K and written out all my values and goals. I've even discussed "savings" with my 4 year old son. I plan to buy this book for birthday gifts to my friends. Do yourself a huge service and READ THIS BOOK! Women empower yourselves. This is easy to read, follow and put into action. I now know what mutual funds, bonds, stock, and IRA's are. It's not hard and knowledge is power. Good luck!

She argues that the formal or generic choices of the four writers studied here reveal that they are using genre as an ideological "strategy of liberation" to help free their peoples and cultures from the hegemonic strategies of "containment" imposed upon them. She concludes that the works studied here constitute an ideological rebuttal of Western writers' denigrating "containment" of non-Western cultures. She also notes that self-criticism, as implied in Rushdie's works, is not be confused with self-hatred, a theme found in Naipaul's work.

About the Author

Frank van der Linden has worked at Philips Medical Systems in The Netherlands since 1999 and been involved with software product lines since then. He was program chair of a series of five workshops on product line engineering, is a member of the steering committee of the SPLC conferences, and co-authored "Software Product Line Engineering" published by Springer in 2005.

Klaus Schmid is professor for software engineering at the University of Hildesheim, Germany. Previously, he was department head for requirements engineering and usability engineering at the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering (IESE) in Kaiserslautern, Germany. He has been involved in numerous research and industrial projects in product line engineering.

Eelco Rommes worked at Philips Research in the area of software architecture for medical systems from 2001 to 2006. During that time he was involved in several research projects and he has published on software product lines and related topics.

Excellent reference on Software Product lines

This book is an excellent reference on software product lines. This book provides detailed information on the subject. Subjects like variability management, Architecture, Architecture requirements are very well written. There is a limited coverage of Service oriented architecture (SOA), Business Process Management (BPM) and Domain Specific languages (DSL). I hope the next edition of this book will look into Software Product lines and Service oriented Architecture in sufficient detail. Industrilizing Services development is slowly picking up and should be considered.

"Wideband Amplifiers by Peter Staric and Eric Margan is to my knowledge by far the best modern book about this topic and can be highly recommended to anyone who is engaged in the design of such amplifiers. It can be truly called a Standard Book, well worth to be included in the Springer catalogue. A substantial portion of the book contains knowledge only available within the very few companies which play a leading role in this field.

One strength of this book is its comprehensiveness: it is not necessary to refer to other books in order to derive benefits from it, the mathematics required to understand the main part are meticulously explained in its first chapters. The second part of the book deals with the standard peaking circuits and then introduces the socalled „T-Coil" which is essentially a complex transformer. The Good Book for the EE Engineer

Finding a book that addresses a topic from the famous MIT Radiation Laboratory Series feels almost like encountering a new version of the bible. The RL Series has provided firm anchors to analog circuit designers throughout the past six decades and represents as such an almost untouchable set of classic texts. Yet, it was high time for comprehensive updates of these texts to see the light of day. For example, the Valley-Wallman's "Vacuum Tube Amplifiers" has first appeared in 1948. Since that time the transistor has been invented, the computers have become an important engineer's design tool and the engineering practice has resulted in many new insights into the field of electronic amplifiers. Authors Peter Staric and Erik Margan have successfully addressed this challenge with their book "Wideband Amplifiers" published by "2006 Springer" of Netherlands.

Just like the Radiation Lab Series, the content of "Wideband Amplifiers" rests on firm understanding of theoretical underpinnings of topics addressed. And just like the former, the "Wideband Amplifiers" is enriched with engineering guidance, stemming from unmistakable hands-on experience. But what gives this book its special vital value is its match to the world of semiconductors and computers.

As the title "Wideband Amplifiers" suggests, the authors have paid particular attention to bandwidth extending techniques. The inductive peaking has received a thorough analysis, starting with a clever introduction of this powerful technique. The many variations of Bessel, Butterworth and real pole circuits are richly illustrated with time and frequency responses, providing the designer with an important warning to consider both while pursuing either.

The same diagrams display also the uncompensated responses, giving the designer a measure of benefit extracted from increased circuit complexity. Each diagram is accompanied by the actual circuit schematics that would produce the relevant responses. The authors have gone even a step further and have provided the methods for calculation and design of cylindrical T-coils and their coupling coefficients. To the practicing engineer this will be an additional welcome shortcut on the path from theory to implementation. To the analytically minded the mathematical derivations of all responses will open the path to creative experimentation before committing a design to implementation.

The authors have taken a noncommittal stand with respect to frequency and time domain approaches of circuit design. As we have hinted earlier this forces the designer who pursues a response in one domain to pay attention also to the behaviour in the other domain. The Fourier and Laplace transforms, tying together the two domains have received an extravagant treatment in the very first chapter of this book. It is likely the most complete set of analytical tools to be found in a non-mathematics book.

Rather than offloading the forward and inverse transformations to the tables as is commonly done, the authors have not shied away from entering the slippery field of contour integration, integration around poles and other complex mathematical constructs underlying the inverse transformations. Yet, they have tied all these mathematical abstractions to the electrical circuitry and have brought them down to earth with many beautiful illustrations. If one wanted desperately to come up with a missing mathematical tool it would be the implicit convolution. By allowing the transfer of unspecified boundary conditions between domains the implicit convolution greatly expands the usability of transforms. Unfortunately, this powerful technique is not widely publicized.

Having obviously enjoyed the beauty of exact mathematical predictability of passive peaking circuit behaviour, the authors bid farewell to exact calculations in the third chapter. Here the amplification part of the book's title joins the wideband part, which was so thoroughly addressed in the second chapter. The semiconductor cascode amplification and the JFET source follower receive the lion's share of the attention. Special needs of oscilloscope amplifiers are addressed and again reveal the hands-on familiarity with the subject. The knowledge acquired in the second chapter is here well integrated with the active elements and is thoroughly analyzed from the viewpoint of the ultimate goal, i.e., wideband amplification.

In the fourth chapter new options offered by multi-stage amplifiers are addressed. The possibility of cascading unequal stages opens a whole new spectrum of possibilities. The predictability of performance by analytical means is again available and the authors make ample use of it. A systematic positioning of Butterworth and Bessel poles dependent on the number of amplification stages takes up much of the chapter's allocated space. Unlike all known classical texts of this genre, this book provides tables of Butterworth and Bessel poles up to the 10-th order. As was the case in earlier chapters, the authors again carefully allocated equal space to frequency and time domain performance questions.

Chapter 5 starts with an implementation of a seven pole two stage amplifier whose bandwidth has been inductively peaked and optimized for time response. This amplifier and most of the following circuits addressed in this chapter should be an oscilloscope designer's wish-come-true. It would include the design of an input attenuator without the bothersome "hook-effect" and a delightful transition from discrete amplifier implementations to integrated versions. Modern operational amplifiers and a variety of integrated components are used in powerful combinations to meet the needs of an oscilloscope or a number of other electronic test instruments.. Issues like linearity, slew rate, overdrive recovery and even error corrections are addressed in this chapter richly endowed with ideas and circuits.

In the sixth chapter the reader is led from the classical mathematics of linear, time invariant, causal systems to its digital equivalent. Again the frequency and time domains receive full attention but this time within the Matlab environment. As the filtered amplification ideas are being developed they are examined with this powerful digital tool. At the same time the readers are familiarized with ways of casting their own ideas into the language that the Matlab Signal Processing Toolbox can understand.

An important contribution of this chapter is a proposed method, which overcomes the known divergent responses of Fourier transform to temporal step inputs. In the classical analog environment of previous chapters this problem was overcome by the use of Laplace transform. The method developed here is applicable to sampled data only. It is successfully used throughout the chapter for evaluation of time responses obtained from sampled spectral data by means of the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. A thorough analysis of errors stemming from the digital nature of signals and from their digital processing is another indicator of the hands-on experience of the authors.

Chapter seven is an implementation of the groundwork developed in chapter 6. The nitty-gritty question of how to get from calculated poles to resistors, capacitors and inductors is addressed here. A rarely encountered analysis of a cascade of an analog and a digital filter is also found in this chapter. Even the complex task of overall optimization of such structures is discussed.

Among other issues addressed, which testify to a thorough familiarity of the authors with the gaps between theoretical and actual performance, of even the best designs, is the question of aliasing. The spurious responses arising from aliasing are vividly illustrated in both time and frequency domain and methods for combating them with windowing are discussed. A proof of authors' successful struggle with aliasing in general, is visible from the beautiful graphs that make the perusal of this book a pleasant experience. But its value to a designer of wide band amplifiers, striving for ultimate performance is unprecedented.

"Wideband Amplifiers" is an excellent book for a postgraduate student of circuit design, or a professional engineering reference. Good qualitative explanations of underlying principles before mathematical treatment. A down to earth writing style attempts, with considerable success, to lift the veil from this often feared part of the `dark art' of analogue design. Highly recommended.

Amazing!!

This is one helluva book!!! the authors really tried to formally explain the subject through mathematical language, in a way that it is useful for the engineer. Im not crazy about the less conventional approach they used to explain the Fourier and Laplace transform, as well as contour integration and residues, however it was a fresh perspective which I certainly enjoyed.

I've heard several times about people complaining that there are no books out there which truly explain the real art of analog design, many analog design books out there are just a collection of magazine articles or application sheets (which are certainly very useful) or covering ubiquitous material which could be found by a simple google search leading to an amateur electronics forum, well this is it, this is as close as it gets to learning the real art of analog design (at least when it comes to amplifiers), not just by proven methods but also through the use of a solid mathematical theory which most advanced undergraduates or graduates could follow.

The book starts from the basics of complex theory, Laplace transforms and basic systems/control theory which is applied throughout the book, it then provides useful tools such as peaking circuits and then fully covers the topic of wideband amplifier design.

The authors use a somehow informal method of writting without becoming excessively pedestrian, it is a true joy reading this book.

Brought peace to me and my relationship with God.

I was ill for a couple years and had a great loss in my life. This book brought so much peace to me and even though I had been angry with God and blamed him for all my troubles, I found my way back to my relationship with him. I thank the author for writing such a wonderful, peace driven book. And I thank her more for bringing me back to my Lord. I also have the cd and it is such a peaceful piece that sometimes in the car driving I put it in and listen. I suggest everyone at least read the book. I think you will find the peace you may have lost, or find your relationship with God more closer. I love this book!

About the Author
John Brueggemann is Professor of Sociology at Skidmore College in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work. He received a B.A. in Sociology and Anthropology from Earlham College (1987) and Masters (1990) and Doctoral (1994) degrees in sociology from Emory University. He has spent his career since then at Skidmore College as a teacher, scholar and administrator. During these 14 years he has taught and written about a range of topics including class, race, inequality, religion, morality, history, social theory and social change. His written work has appeared in academic journals such as Social Problems, Work and Occupations, Social Science History, The Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, Critical Sociology, and Theology Today. I also coauthored Racial Competition and Class Solidarity, which was published by SUNY in 2006.

A wonderful read on class, status, and power

This book highlighted the issues in the modern world, as well as what happened in the past. There is a lot of text, but it is written so well I flew through the chapters.

This book contains a lot of very interesting chapters about almost every social subject (since they are all connected and when we study inequality, we also need to study class, gender, political system, economic system, race, etc). Very good to learn about how things really work in society.

About the Author
R. Jacob Baker is an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Assistant Director of the Microelectronics Research Center at the University of Idaho. He teaches several courses on CMOS analog and digital circuit design and has consulted internationally in these areas. With eight years of industry experience at E. G. & G. Energy Measurements, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Micron Semiconductor, Dr. Baker brings an industrial perspective into the classroom and was selected as the College of Engineering's Outstanding Young Faculty in 1997.

Harry W. Li is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Idaho. Dr. Li is actively involved with the University's Microelectronics Research Center. He has received numerous teaching awards and is the department's outreach coordinator, presenting "hands-on" demonstrations of electrical engineering to area schools.

David E. Boyce is an independent consultant on semiconductor technologies. He has more than 20 years experience working for General Electric, RCA, and Harris. He has been involved in numerous projects, mainly in the fields of medical ultrasonic imaging, power and high-voltage integrated circuits, and optoelectronics.

Clear, concrete, comprehensive, self-contained CMOS text

The best of books say something important, and say it well. CMOS Circuit Design, Layout, and Simulation by Baker, Li, and Boyce is such a book. Rather than an opinion-free text, it's insight mixed with experience; when something is important, they tell you it's important.
The style is very clear, the copious graphics help explain and cement the ideas, and the numerous worked exercises, which apply the theory just developed, allow the exposition to flow -- it makes sense, the transitions are smooth and well motivated, and there are a lot of very good ideas and clever circuits in the book.
In addition to design, layout, and simulation of digital, analog, and mixed signal circuits (including memory circuits, Schmitt Triggers, PLLs, A2Ds, D2As, and VCOs), there is enough background in device physics to justify the equations underlying the theory.
The exposition is exceptional. The figures are usually on the same or facing page so you can look at what's being described. Derivations are worked out with a wealth of schematics and small signal models. The book is centered on CMOS, so there's no need to translate bipolar designs from earlier classic texts like Gray and Meyer. The treatment is up to date, with recent research results included and explained.
The book is comprehensive, complete, self-contained, and practical; it's anchored in a real process, works with (but does not require) the LASI CAD software, and provides ready access to design information, from the inside front cover summaries to a chapter on extracting parameters from BSIM models for hand calculation through the process and design rules in the appendices.
The only significant omission is a description of metastability, and how to reduce its impact.
This book is a creation of care and craft. It is a joy to read and to review.

None better for learning Analog/Digital CMOS Ckt design

Get this book if you want to learn how to design CMOS integrated circuits! It comes with information on downloading free layout and design tools from the web for MS Windows. It integrates the topics of chip layout with analog, digital and mixed-mode design. The discussions are very clear and practical. The writing style is great: discuss a topic and then provide an example.
