Fingerstyle notation at its finest

I ordered this book to learn some tunes people would be familiar with at various events I play in. Having played mostly classical my whole life, I have ventured into fingerstyle acoustic guitar, and this book is a great gateway into all the fun to be had! Ben Woolman's transcriptions are brilliant, and precise. There are pieces for the intermediate player such as the "Theme From Schindler's List," and "Hedwig's Theme," while, a more advanced player might venture into "Theme From Superman." The book contains sheet music, tablature, and left hand fingerings. These pieces are a must have for any gigging musician. You and your audience will be pleased with these pieces.

*Starred Review* Thornburg’s 1976 thriller may be the quintessential cult crime classic. It’s one of those books that isn’t widely known today—it came and went at the time of its publication, reviewed well but never garnering widespread attention—but continues to be cited by other writers as groundbreaking (George Pelecanos wrote the glowing introduction to the 2001 reprint edition). It’s a post-Vietnam novel as much as it is crime fiction, much like Robert Stone’s Dog Soldiers (1974). Its dual protagonists are Richard Bone, once a middle-class midwestern ad man, now a dissolute California drifter, and Alex Cutter, a crippled vet with a serious grudge against the corporate world. Bone sees a man he thinks might be tycoon J. J. Wolfe stuffing something into a trash can. That something turns out to be a hooker, and at Cutter’s prodding, Bone and Cutter attempt to find out if it really was Wolfe who did the stuffing. We know from the start that nothing good can come of their investigation. Cutter would have us think that nailing this one rich guy would be a small symbolic step toward righting a world that went seriously wrong with Vietnam. Bone, like the reader, knows differently but can’t help following the scent. There is a peculiar kind of despair that sinks into the bone marrow of damaged war survivors—film noir was born out of that despair in the post-WWII era—and Thornburg nails the Vietnam version. The ending is pure Chinatown, with a dose of Easy Rider, and it leaves us reeling. --Bill Ott

Dead Souls

One of the best depictions of mid-'70s America I've come across, this powerful novel was written when the country was struggling to recover from the Vietnam War and remains as a vivid reminder of that time. Set mostly in Santa Barbara, the story follows two men firmly stuck in cycles of self-destruction. Bone dropped out of the corporate life and left his wife and kids in Minnesota to float around California as a gigolo, while Cutter came back from Vietnam minus an arm and a leg and teeters on the brink of insanity. Both are utterly disillusioned with the world around them and spend a great deal of time drinking and trying to blot out their rapidly suburbanizing, strip-mallifying, consumerist surroundings. The third member of this circle of dead souls is the sarcastic, Quaalude popping Mo, Cutter's live-in girlfriend and mother to his baby.
The whole book reads like one big hangover-the party (late '60s free love, rebellion, Vietnam, etc.) is over, and someone's gotta pay. One evening Bone unknowingly witnesses a murderer disposing of a victim, and what he half saw leads to a half-baked scheme to make some money. In another writer's hands, this could have lead to a comic caper, but Thornburg is intent on showing the county's loss of innocence through the bitter, maimed, and reckless Cutter, and his guilt-ridden and aimless buddy Bone. One problem I had with the story was the friendship between the two men. The book unfolds from Bone's perspective, and it's hard to fathom why he keeps returning to Cutter's side, other than guilt and/or a self-destructive streak.
In any event, the book starts fairly slow and there were a few times I considered ditching it. By the second half though, the lean prose gets more and more compelling, and the dilemmas get a bit more interesting. The final quarter or so takes the two men on a road trip from California to the Ozarks, in possible pursuit of the murderer. The climax is awfully gripping in a "y'all ain't from around here" Deliverance kind of way, and the final sentence packs a huge punch. ...Still, book's theme-that the Vietnam war did irreparable damage to the American psyche and values, and led to an America where money and consumption are king and justice is a mirage-emerges in full color, and the book remains an important picture of the empty '70s.
Note: This was made into a great dark film called Cutter's Way.

Read This One It's a Real Find!

The film is a neglected classic, and the novel it was inspired by is likewise. It will hook you as a good thriller does, yet also profoundly engage you with it's extraordinary mixture of the poetic and the grittily, absurdly real. The Characterisation is rich and broad and constantly surprising - tough yet warm - and it is stylistically muscular in a Chandleresque way, without ever becoming arch. Touching movingly on so many issues from some extremely archetypal relationships to the state of post-Vietnam America, Thornburg takes you on a rollercoaster ride that you won't want to get off. Finally, as an exploration of messed-up masculine insecurity it is devastating and compulsive with that rare thing in such books,great female characters! Read the book, see the film - you won't forget either.

Richard Bone is a handsome stud who uses women to his advantage. Alex Cutter is bitter Vietnam war vet: Crippled, relentlessly articulate, and seemingly always drunk, they make an unlikely friendship. That is until on day Bone witnesses a man dumping a dead body of a young woman; a man answering the description of a powerful business tycoon. So, pushed on by Cutter's vengeful maxims about the rich, they both decide to investigate in the hope of bringing the tycoon to book. But neither of them will ever guess the savage payoff. A powerful novel that deals with post-vietnam malaise and corporate power, this is highly recommended.

Make your point already...

I am a senior English major at the University of Vermont and at first I was surprised to think that that this book might be a bit over my head. I now see that Mazur is simply horrible at logically conveying her very complicated literary opinions. She also just might be too smart for her own good, but she should still be able to make a coherent point. Mazur continually runs the reader in circles with her overly complicated sentence structures and writing style, and worse, she never really makes concrete conclusions to follow her already incomplete theses.

Here is an appropriate analogy to put Krystyna Mazur in a nutshell: She is like that kid that sits in the front row of class, thinks he's super smart...and so he talks a lot. The first few days you listen to him, because it sounds somewhat good and seems to know what he's talking about. But then the more you listen, the more it becomes apparent that even though he has a seemingly impressive vocabulary, he never actually says anything meaningful. Then you begin to wonder if he is even using these words you've never heard correctly. Eventually it gets to the point where every time that kid speaks in class, I roll my eyes and try not to groan out loud.

Excellent Source for Christian Prayer and Meditation

First, let me say that I am not Lutheran. A few of the prayers have specific petitions on behalf of Lutheran pastors and congregations. I generally skip over those when I pray those prayers. Naturally, the prayers do reflect a Lutheran take on matters of doctrine. As I am considerably Lutheran in my understanding of a wide variety of doctrines, that is not a problem, but a benefit for me. For other Christians, it may be a detriment.

With those caveats out of the way, I find the prayers in this book to be very moving and serious. They focus my prayers on whom I am, a sinner, and what I need, Christ. There are morning and evening prayers as well as prayers for special times in the Christian Year, special life events (e.g., births, marriages, deaths), special relationships (e.g., spouse, parents, children) and for God's work in the world.

I cannot recommend highly enough this small, portable volume.

Very Substantive Prayer Resource

Though I'm not currently Lutheran, I have over the last few months been rapidly moving toward Lutheran theology. I bought this book with the hope that it would give me a glimpse of what prayer looked like to Luther. In short, my prayer life has been positively transformed through the prayers of this little book. Each prayer begins with a reminder of our standing before God, and moves into recognition of the awesomeness of God. I have left each prayer session with a renewed sense of my weakness and God's greatness. For those who are concerned that scripted prayers seem too contrived, I would provide a bit of advice. Don't simply read the prayers, but think about what you're saying as you read. Our Heavenly Father places far more stock in a sincerely offered pre-written submission than an off-the-cuff prayer that is devoid of any substance or humility.

Great Daily Resource

I bought my first copy of this book nearly a year ago, and have used it almost daily since. It is a fabulous resource for both laity and clergy, providing well articulated and orthodox prayers for daily, and not so daily life. The daily prayers are sequenced in three, one week blocks, which helps minimize predictability. The prayers for more pointed times or events are easily referenced in the back for quick locating.

Also included are the three great creeds, and some very important (Lutheran) commentary on Baptism and the Eucharist. I recommend this little book very highly, and will be purchasing them for my Confirmation classes from here on out.

I wished I had noticed this is just a kids activity book. Pages to color, and several blank pages to write out little essays. I guess I could always pull out my crayons.

The title of the book is one of the world's enigmatic subject yet to be discovered. Although, I enjoyed reading it but the book didn't offer much in the subject.
