As a MASSIVE nerd of the original Bionicle, I'm thrilled that it has continued. But like the sets, the book has increased in price since the hiatus, which is to be expected, given 5 years of inflation. It's about as long as the previous generation's books, though the text seemed a bit larger to me.

When I first heard an accredited author such as Windham would be writing the new books, I was thrilled. After reading it, I'm not so excited. First of all, the second half of the book almost exactly follows the online animations word-for-word, though not all the animations have been released yet, so a look further into the story was appreciated. Back on point. Since the book follows the animations so closely, the dialogue is, frankly, terrible. I even caught myself reading in the online narrator's voice, such as "Adededbeda heeyah that weeyad voys in my headagain" and "I AM THA MOSTAH AFF FAIYAUGH!" One plot hole I was hoping would be answered was, "Why didn't protectors of previous generations summon the Toa to awaken Ekimu centuries ago, even when it first happened?" This question is not answered. And I'm very, very disappointed.

Second problem with the writing: Greg Farshtey, the writer for 97% of the last generation's books, regularly interacted with fans young and old, getting a feel for just how much information they could grasp. Like the online animations, Windham has taken the liberty of spoonfeeding us the information out of a jar of Gerber's, SEVERELY underestimating our collective age and intelligence. I doubt anyone with this level of reading comprehension would even want to read a book lacking illustrations.

Third, for characters that have been around 14 years, the Toa have VERY bland personalities. When they show even the slightest sign of development, they contradict their previous generation's incarnations, which again is due to the online animations' writer.

Now, the good. The first half of the book gives us a GREAT insight into the history, culture, and geography of Okoto, or at least better than I remember reading about Mata and Metru Nui. Though the latter had movies, comics, and video games to flesh them out instead. The book describes exactly how the island was separated into regions, and why the masks were scattered, something sorely lacking from the animations, and both names and elaborates on the Protectors, only one of whom got a speaking part online. I have to say I was most impressed by Korgot, Protector of Earth's willingness to break the father-to-son tradition of the protectors, as she is female. Very, VERY glad we finally have a female character who has an element that's not water.

Along the top of every page is the Okoto alphabet, which the fans have yet to fully decode. Between sections, though, there are bits of legible Okoto symbols spelling out characters' names, though it's a bit bothersome that the name only matches up with the following character once.

In short, Windham starts off very well, fleshing out the island when he has the creative freedom. But as the book goes on and he's restricted by the animations, well... The book ends up being just as terrible as the animations. But I don't care, because BIONICLE IS BACK!

The packaging, shipping and everything else was great.
Now to the book.
The writing is honestly not up to par.
And before you make the argument that this is a children's book, Greg Farshtey did the Bionicle books during Bionicle's first run, and he did a better job than this new guy.
There was more of a complexity to the older books that was still relatable to both kids, teens, and adults, even to this day. The writing has honestly gone downhill. Hopefully they either get a better author or this author improves his writing.

I was disappointed of the book

I was disappointed of the book.

The first half is exactly what I expected: we see characters and settings outside what has already been published in the website. Solid building blocks to create an epic tale.

The second half failed miserably, being an exact description of the animations available in the website. I expected to have a more complete story with more events than the ones in the animations. Sadly the book doesn't even gives more insight into the events shown in the videos. It's just plain lame.

I really expect the next book rises the bar and is more complete and detailed than this one.

I was moved to tears.

This book is a well written, and moving account of the final week of Jesus. You feel as though you are walking along with Him during that time. You can feel the pain, rejection, and triumph of the crucifixion and resurrection. This is a life changing book. I was literally moved to tears the first time that I read this book.

Old book, timeless story

I first read "The First Easter", by Peter Marshall, over 25 years ago. It now is a permanent part of my "favorite books" shelf, and I buy used copies quite often to give as gifts to family, friends, and church libraries. Soon after starting the book, I was caught up in the lives and times of Jesus and His Disciples, and felt as though I was a bystander as the final week of Jesus' life before His crucifixion played out in front of my eyes. When Mary cried at the tomb, I cried with her, and when she saw Jesus, her joy was so real, that I felt like I was right there with her, seeing Him and believing that He was raised from the dead, just as He had promised. Easy reading, can be completed in a few hours, but leaves a lasting feeling of having been there.

Every preacher and Christian speaker should read this. Great senses, smells, images, feelings, challenges. The format makes for easy reading and using for any speech. Read this decades ago and now I buy copies to give away as a part of my book giving ministry.

Inspiring with a tear jerker end...

When I was young I remeber a copy of People magazine that my mom had lying around with Ryan White on the cover. For some reason I always took an interest to him, and his life, and all the article that I could find on him. In high school I remeber reading part of it to do an exta credit project. Finally 2 year out of high school I decided to reread the story of his life. It is amazing how people really are. It really hit home, not living too far from Kokomo, Indiana where he was from, that people in my community would treat people this way. It is also amazing how much determination he had to be who he was and not let anyone or anything get in the way. This book is great!!!! Everyone should read it and put themselves in this families shoes!!

A Story Full of Hope

I first read Ryan White's Story last summer of 2002. It was a wonderful book. It really made me think about my own life and I relized that I needed to be thankful for each day the Lord gave me. Having AIDS can be a really hard thing for someone to deal with. But with all the courage that Ryan White had, he did everyting he could to stop it from coming but death took his toll and he died on in April of 1990. We need to remember to help those who "might" have AIDS. Today, fear of AIDS still lurks in the air and even one or two people might get it but if I remember right 1 in 10 people get AIDS. It's sad but it's really true.

This book allowed me to finish Steelhead faster than I ever would have dreamed!

I think the most useful reviews are ones in which the product in question was actually tested. This is why I waited until after my half ironman before writing this review. I did Steelhead 70.3 less than a week ago and I’m happy to report that, using only this book (and never having done a half iron before), I utterly destroyed even my most optimistic goals! I’m still on cloud 9 just thinking about it! For a little background, I’m a middle of the pack age-grouper and have done about 4 olympics and 12 or so sprints so, as you can see, I’m no Dave Scott. My Oly PR is 2:57 and I trained hard for that using a personalized online program. So, let’s cut to the chase. Here are the pros and cons of this awesome book:
Pros:
1) It has everything you need in one short and simple book. Besides the training programs (3 of them), there are sections on heart rate training, specific swim workouts, strength training, stretching, core work, transitions, nutrition, race day fueling/hydration, equipment, technique, mental aspects, recovery, injury prevention, missed workout adjustment, adjusting the programs for tune up races, etc. Like I said, it has everything. And it’s all very clearly explained.
2) It’s time-based instead of miles-based. This makes time management for busy people like us much easier. Of course, If you’re slow, you may not achieve the distances you should be so some adjustment may be required (for example, starting the program early to build you fitness). This is what I did which I’ll explain later.
3) It’s designed with a great degree of flexibility built right in. I used the “intermediate” program which includes 2 rest/slide days. These “slide” days and where they occur are the key. Every Friday and Monday are rest/slide days. To quote the book: “…use them to slide your rest days forward or back one day to better fit your training schedule...”. At first, I thought 2 days of rest/slide was one too many and thought I would use the Monday rest/slide session for an extra swim workout. It turns out that the slide days were crucial in maintaining consistency. I missed very few workouts because I could do it on a slide day when life got in the way (which it always does).
4) It is heart rate based. Be careful with this one. Initially, I used a formula which underestimated my max heart rate by a wide margin. This made for some painfully slow workouts. Only when I actually measured my max HR using one of the protocols described in the book (I did the 5k run protocol) did my workouts become appropriately challenging. Don’t worry, they explain everything you need to know about the zones and all that.
5) Brick sessions. I thought the bike-run bricks proved to be useful come race day. I was used to the feeling of running right off the bike. Not everyone agrees with the utility of brick sessions but I thought they helped. Some are very long, though. For example, the intermediate program calls for a 4 hour 15 min bike workout followed immediately by a 45 min run. I usually cut the run short (but don’t tell the Finks!!).
6) Intervals, hill repeats, and other hard sessions. While not super fun, I feel that these really helped increase my speed and strength. Don’t skip them.
7) There are 3 full training programs to choose from. These are the “just finish”, the intermediate, and the competitive programs. I chose the intermediate program because I wanted to more than “just finish” and the competitive program looked like a bit much. It turns out that the intermediate program was pretty time consuming and intense in my opinion (but you ARE training for a half ironman after all!) However, I would choose it again. It’s also laid out in a very easy to understand format (unlike other some other programs that have multiple codes for workouts written in a complex spreadsheet-like format).
8) There are only 2 swim sessions per week in the intermediate program. This could be a con depending on your philosophy. I view the swim as something to complete in a reasonable time without being exhausted. If you hope you rock the swim, you may want to add another swim session (on a slide day perhaps) or do the competitive program (which includes the option of a 3rd swim session). But the 2 per week swim worked for me and my goals. It worked out to about 5000 yds/week. I suppose you could do more yardage while sticking to 2 sessions/week if you’re worried.
Now for some cons:
1) Only 2 swim sessions per week is not enough according to some folks but it fit my goals nicely. (see above).
2) Some of the bike and run workouts are longer the other half iron training program I’ve seen. The longest run was 2:15 (about 14 miles for me) and the longest bike was 4:15 (about 70 miles). Still, come race day, I felt more than ready because of it. It’s the first time during a tri that I wasn’t wondering why the hell am I doing this and when is it gonna be over. However, I did experience some hip pain near the end of the program so maybe it was a lot for my body to handle. Long story short, listen to your body.
3) It’s not personalized. I was worried about this one since I’ve purchased custom plans from the internet in the past with pretty good results. “How could a program from a book compare to an expensive, personalized program from a real coach?” I wondered. Well, from this experience, it compares very favorably and for a truckload less money. You could buy an aero helmet with the money you save.
Just one additional point. I was a bit rusty since I slacked so bad in the off season, so I decided to do the first week of the intermediate program for a month to prepare myself for the 16 week program. This turned out to be a very good idea. So I essentially turned this 16 week program into a 20 week program. You may not need to do that but I thought I would just throw it out there.
In summary, this book was exactly what I needed to prepare for my first ever half ironman. I highly recommend it. I would have been happy with 6:20 but my secret dream goal that I didn’t anyone about was to break 6hrs. I demolished even my dream goal by 20 solid minutes! I never felt so great after a tri in my life. If you got through this review, then you’ll have no problem with a half ironman. I hope it helped and may you demolish your dream goal too!

Great book for any self coached age grouper!

Don Fink's book is the best "How to" book in triathlon that I have read. It is an easy read and yes, it does have the obligatory real people stories that are the fillers in a "How to" book, but Don is a master at simplicity and he gets it. What he gets is what people want (well, what I want) in a triathlon "How to" book: Simplicity, explanations of why and guidelines; lots of guidelines. Don Fink puts it all together in a clear and concise read that includes a "competitive, intermediate and just to finish" workout plan. Is it for everyone, well, if you are an age-grouper who chooses to self-coach, then YES, it is for everyone. I have also read Don's book called Be Iron Fit. This book parallels Be Iron Fit in simplicity but varies in ways that matter when racing the Half Iron distance. You can choose to modify the training programs in the book to suit your own needs or goals but still use his simplistic approach as a guide. Probably the best thing I liked about the Iron Fit program, which returns in this book is the regularity of the workouts, week after week. He varies the intensity and duration but every Monday is off or slide day, Tuesday is a run, Wednesday is a bike/run etc. Other trainers weekly programs have you varying from week to week. As an age group triathlete and someone who works 9-5 every day, routine is something I can plan for, with my family, workout partners and work. Excellent book that I would highly recommend to any self coached triathlete.

Another triathlon training gem by Don Fink

When I first started in triathlon, I bought and read 7 books by various authors/coaches. Don's style stood out to me as a perfect balance of providing the technical know-how that I lacked, as well as the plain language common sense perspective which I enjoy and prefer to learn from. This book approaches the half iron-distance approach in a similar manner to his earlier books which focused on the full Ironman distance. It works. Using Don Fink's guidance, I went from couch potato to Kona and 70.3 World Championship qualifier over the course of seven years, while enjoying every minute of the journey.

Whether your goal is to go from the couch to completion of your first 70.3, or to eventually test your full potential at the distance, you simply do not need to look further. He's been there and done that, but more importantly, he's helped a vast number of individuals (including me) do the same thing.

About the Author
George Tchobanoglous is a professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering at the University of California at Davis. He received a B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of the Pacific, an M.S. degree in sanitary engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in environmental engineering from Stanford University. His principal research interests are in the areas of solid waste management, wastewater treatment, wastewater filtration, aquatic systems for wastewater treatment, and individual onsite treatment systems. He has taught courses on these subjects at UC Davis for the past 32 years. He has authored or co-authored over 350 technical publications including 12 textbooks and 3 reference books. He is the principal author of a textbook titled "Solid Waste Management: Engineering Principles and Management Issues, " published by McGraw-Hill. The textbooks are used in more than 200 colleges and universities throughout the United States, and they ate also used extensively by practicing engineers in the United States and abroad.

Dr. Tchobanoglous is an active member of numerous professional societies. He is a corecipient of the Gordon Maskew Fair Medal and the Jack Edward McKee Medal from the Water Environment Federation. Professor Tchobanoglous serves nationally and internationally as a consultant to government agencies and private concerns. He is a past president of the Association of Environmental Engineering Professors. He is consulting editor for the McGraw-Hill book company series in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering. He has served as a member of the California Waste Management Board. He is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and a registered Civil Engineer in California.

Frank Kreith is a professor emeritus of engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he taught in the Mechanical and Chemical Engineering Departments from 1959 to 1978. For the past 13 years, Dr. Kreith served as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) legislative fellow at the National Conference of State Legislatives (NCSL), where he provided assistance on waste management, transportation, and energy issues to legislators in state governments. Prior to joining NCSL in 1988, Dr. Kreith was chief of thermal research at the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI), now the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). During his tenure at SERI, he participated in the presidential domestic energy review and served as an advisor to the governor of Colorado. In 1983, he received SERI's first General Achievement Award. He has written more than a hundred peer-reviewed articles and authored or edited 12 books.

Dr. Kreith has served as a consultant and advisor all over the world. His assignments included consultancies to Vice Presidents Rockefeller and Gore, the U.S. Department of Energy, NATO, the U.S. Agency for National Development, and the United Nations. He is the recipient of numerous national awards, including the Charles Greeley Abbott Award from the American Solar Energy Society and the Max Jakob Award from ASME-AIChE. In 1992, he received the Ralph Coates Roe Medal for providing technical information to legislators about energy conservation, waste management, and environmental protection, and in 1998 he was the recipient of the pretigious Washington Award for "unselfish and preeminent service in advancing human progress."

Professor Peter A. Wilderer is in charge of the Institute an Advanced Studies on Sustainability, funded by the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. He teaches at the German Institute of Science and Technology, Singapore, in Industrial Ecology and Industrial Chemistry. Besides he serves as honorary professor at the Advanced Wastewater Management Center of the University of Queensland, Australia. In 2003, he received the Stockholm Water Prize 2003. He has authored and co-authored over 300 scientific publications.

Professor Edward D. Schroeder is a member of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of California, Davis. He has authored or co-authored over 120 papers and two textbooks on various aspects of environmental engineering.

Professor Horst Kopp is working at the Institute for Geography at the Friederich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. He is co-editor of The Arab World Geographer.

Well-researched, scholarly bio worthy of McCullers.

A biography worthy of one of America's unsung literary heroes. McCullers insight into the human condition and her flawless skill at structure and composition belies her second class stature among the great literary artists of mid-century America. This work brings that genius to the foreground. If you are interested in a thorouhly researched, scholarly portrait of McCullers life and work, this bio is a must read.

The Lonely Hunter: A Biography of Carson McCullers--A Study in Trivial Pursuits

Out of respect for the work ethic, add an extra half star to this review. Of the many biographies I have read, Virginia Spencer Carr's "The Lonely Hunter" is by far the most torturous. As I slogged through 537 pages chronicling the life and times of this talented but complex personality, I couldn't help but think of the young schoolboy who when his teacher observed he showed an interest in sharks, brought him a book on that subject. Later she asked her student if he had learned much about sharks. The boy replied, "Yes, more than I wanted to know." One certainly can't accuse Ms. Carr of not doing her research (21 pages of source citations) in McCullers' biography. It's as if she needs to account for every hour of her subject's life. Like Carson's omnipresent thermos of hot tea and sherry, we are asked to sip every detail of her life to the very last drop.

I read "The Lonely Hunter" to learn more about a young woman who at the age of twenty-three wrote the wonderful novel "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter." I was intrigued by how Carson, at such a young age, could write that poignant story with a skill and wisdom that comes only with practice and life experience. In this regard Carr delivers. She explains McCullers' fascination with "fringe" people, those human beings who because of physical, mental or social defects walk the darker paths of humankind. Thus the deaf mute John Singer in "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter." Carson's "we of me" concept, a sort of psychic menage a trois, many of which involved McCullers herself during her life, translates to similar relationships between the pages of her books.The young girl Mick Kelly in Carson's novel has her "inner room," where she keeps her dreams, her goals, her love of music, an expression of McCuller's own talent for and devotion to music. Carr relates, too, how her subject's thesis that an antagonism forms in "lover/beloved" realtionships manifests itself in Carson's stories. I was disappointed Carr did not reveal more about McCullers' austere writing style, her masterful use of the simple declarative sentence. And though the biographer cites the many books and authors Carson read, she makes no connection between these and McCullers' craft.

Carson McCullers was a complex human being as Spenser Carr so well reveals, a daughter fussed over and smothered by an adoring mother to the point Carson became a lifelong egocentric, a person to be suffered by her friends (though willingly by most), needy to the point of being parasitic. I found Carson's abandonment of her suicidal husband Reeves (she married him twice) indefensible. But as is often the case with many artists, they are ennobled only by their art.

Like her fellow Georgian and contemporary Flannery O'Connor (they lived only 130 miles apart, even were granted extended stays at the artists' colony Yaddo, but never met--strange...), Carson experienced health issues for much of her adult life (O'Connor died of lupus at the age of 39; McCullers age 50). And thanks to Spenser Carr the reader must endure it too; every trip to the hospital, every illness, every bout with the flu, nearly every runny nose, we are present at her bedside. McCullers' pregnancy and abortion, though, receives a scant paragraph and a half. (Given Carson's liberal attitudes toward sex, whether the father was husband Reeves or one of the many men in her life, the author never says.) Furthermore,an abortion would seem to be a major life event to an adult woman. But only a paragraph and a half??

Other readers might appreciate Carr's thorough research and meticulous attention to detail, but after the first few chapters the book to me became a drone of minutiae: like panning gold, I had to sift a great deal of sand before I came to the precious flecks. As I turned the final page, I found myself thinking much the same as the boy and his sharks--I learned much more about Carson McCullers than I needed--or wanted--to know.

If You like Biographies, If You love Carson McCullers

I read biographies of artists...mostly writers. This is a dense book, full of detail, covering McCullers' entire life. If you prefer memoirs written in the genre "creative non-fiction," then you probably won't be drawn into this book. But if you have read a lot of biographies, as I have, and are used to the non-active and somewhat dry academic narratives that are found in these types of books, and are interested in the life that brought about McCuller's timeless work, you will find this biography to be one of the best. It is respectful, and also fascinating to those of us who consider McCullers to have been a literary and artistic genius.

Pure excellence, but with a disclaimer

There are 87 other reviews here, so all I will do is offer the following breakdown for people interested in buying this book. Put yourself in one of these categories:

a) Competative runners: this is an increadible book, period. The best part about it is reading about a little tiny nuance in Quenton's running life and saying to yourself, "I know exactly what he's talking about, wow", which will happen literally hundreds of times. Your hopefully already-substantial appreciation for the sport will likely increase tenfold with this book.

b) The casual runner, recreational, or other athlete: this is an excellent book and is very highly reccomended. You probably will not appreciate it to it's fullest extent, but there are aspects of the story and how it is told that will be enjoyed by anyone with the capacity for excitement from sports or human physical endeavors.

c) The non-athlete: this book may not make sense to you. Not in the literary sense, but it may seem as though there is little direction in the story, and you might read it and then find yourself thinking that nothing interesting really happened, and you are not really to blame for this. There is still a good chance that you will find it enjoyable, but if you are looking for a piece of literature based on traditional merits (plot, character development, etc) there are likely better books out there for you to spend time on.

Clearly I thought this book was one of the best I've ever read. However, I hope this breakdown about who in particular might enjoy it the most was helpful.

So much more than just the best "running" novel of all time

Once a Runner has been described as the best running novel of all time - and I can't argue with that. However it is also so much more than just a running book. As a middle of the pack weekend warrior I've never experienced the elite levels of success described in the book, however it gives a great insight into what that would take, the complete engulfment of life by running and the highs and lows experienced along the way.

Parker however does a wonderful job in developing characters that are easily related to and understood so that even non-runners would be absorbed by the story. At points it was a little predictable however I still had more than enough times reading "just one more page..." to find out what happened next. A classic for all the right reasons.
