About the Author

Andrew Lawson has been a professional archaeologist for nearly 40 years. After a spell as a research assistant for the University of Chicago, he worked for 10 years as a prehistorian in the Norfolk Museums Service. He held the post of Unit Director/Chief Executive of the Trust for Wessex Archaeology, one of Britain's leading professional practices, for 20 years. Throughout his career he has visited rock art sites in Europe and elsewhere. He has excavated sites of all periods, published a wide range of archaeological papers, has lectured to university and extra-mural courses, and has led specialist tours to prehistoric sites in many countries.

Top 5 Books about Painted Caves of Western Europe

One of the truly great books on Prehistoric Cave Art in Western Europe and mainly focuses on Cro-Magnon or EEMH (Early European Modern Humans) works in France and Spain where the vast majority of these caves and outdoor "art" of the Upper Pleistocene are located going back to 40,000 years ago. This book is very recent (2012) and up to date with most of the latest knowledge. This is really not a book to use if you want to see photographic plates of the paintings, although there are some and mainly in b&w and of excellent quality as well as maps. graphs, and charts. Instead Lawson puts his focus on telling you about the works from his vast storehouse of knowledge and interesting problems with even the latest dating techniques and thew major schools of thought historically.

If you want to be brought up to date on the latest current knowledge in the field this is definitely a book for you. Although somewhat scholarly in tone, it is a good read for the layman. Lawson traces the many past theories and current ones and though he is reluctant to back any he does provide you with enough information to wonder...Why?

One of the top 5 books for the reader in this field. Other books have some dazzling photography and a couple are by Jean Clottes (Chauvet) and Norbert Aujoulat (Lascaux) though neither has the detailed and comprehensive information Lawson presents on dozens of caves.

I wouldn't recommend this as a starter book on the subject and it is written more on the university level. I think there are easier books for the new cave art enthusiast to begin with. If you already have some knowledge and background you will enjoy Lawson's depth and detail.

About the Author
James Whyle grew up in the Amatole Mountains of the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. Conscripted into the apartheid army, he was discharged on the grounds of insanity. He did everything in his power to assist the authorities in arriving at this diagnosis. His play about the experience, National Madness, has been called "a simple, subtle and frequently satirical portrait of the condition of militarism".

Whyle has published poetry, short stories and journalism. His radio dramas, commissioned by the BBC, include A Man Called Rejoice which was published as Rejoice Burning in the UK in New South African Plays. His screenplay for the film Otelo Burning was nominated for achievement in screenplay by the Africa Movie Academy Awards. His story, The Story, was chosen by JM Coetzee as winner of the 2011 Pen/Studzinski competition.

CAPTIVATING STORY

Robert Munro, is a therapist who specializes in dream interpretation.
A practical no-nonsense character, he is disappointed and even annoyed, to learn that his ten-year-old son has
imaginary friends and that his wife's depression has not eased over time. He also believes that there is a pill for
everything. I enjoyed reading about this flawed character who is judgemental, a bit critical and unable to express emotions to his own family. How's that for a therapist?
Without giving too much away, Robert is stunned when he realizes that he is turning into his father, who he despises.
Luckily, Robert has a turning point in life that humbles him and makes him see his follies and how his behavior has impacted on those around him.
The writing is great, the premise is captivating and the story managed to wring many emotions from me, the reader. That to me is a great book.
Highly recommended.

Clever and Surprising!

I was taken in by this book right from the start, which is always a good sign. From the first couple of pages, it's a puzzle to the reader just as much to the protagonist. Dr. Robert Munro is a therapist who thinks he has all the answers, but as this compelling and thought-provoking story goes on, it becomes clear that he not only doesn't know the answers, he's not even sure what the questions are.

We follow Dr. Munro as he - and the reader - become less and less sure what's real, what's a dream, and what the difference even is. It's a testament to the author's skill that this all follows naturally, and the reader is drawn into it a little at a time until we're questioning everything right along with the protagonist.

The supporting characters are equally well-drawn and compelling, and it's clear that the author has a strong background and deep knowledge of psychology and the imagery of dreams. The prose is clear and comfortable reading, and the payoff at the end is well worth the journey to get there. I'd highly recommend this book, and will look out for Mr. Davis' other works.

Real dreams

Stormy Weather by Dermot Davis is a surprising book that follows it principal character in and out of reality, into and out of dreams. These perhaps separate worlds seem to coalesce, so the reader is swept along with Robert Munro's confusion, where frighteningly real illusions and occasional farce punctuate his tragically disintegrating life. The reader is drawn into the character's experience, and thus shares the sensation, despite Robert remaining a distinctly third person. A direct, deceptively simple style keeps up the pace, but reflective moments offer pause for real thought.

Robert Munro is a shrink. He copes with - or should that be does not cope with? - other people's stress, psychiatric problems, depression and delusion. He rents a space from Dr Harding, an office equipped with the tools of his trade, where he regularly assists his patients in the process of confronting their problems, a process that increasingly he seems less than able to apply to himself. Alison administers on reception. She reminds him of his appointments when his mind starts to wander. But Alison is sick, too often sick for Dr Harding's standards, and surely she will soon get her marching orders. Dr Harding applies these same exacting standards to everyone in his establishment, and Robert's recent behaviour has already caused concern and caught the attention. He has been scattered, to put it mildly. He has been late for appointments and has conducted consultations in the coffee bar, rather than in his office. Standards have slipped, it seems. Things have become quite slack.

And that's because Robert is under pressure. His wife, Gail, has left him and taken Jason, their son, with her. Jason also seems to be suffering from the effects of stress. He has dreams and nightmares, but it may be his fraught father's anxiety that he has caught. Robert has become so forgetful, it seems, that he does not remember whether he has replaced a loose floorboard or two in the house.

And the stress shows particularly when he drives. There's a crossroads on the way to work, one of those four-lane-ends where no-one has a right of way. The behaviour, both the predictable and the less so, of other drivers invariably frustrates Robert to his core, whenever he has to negotiate such a crossing. One of these days, that crossing will surely be the death of him, especially now that his mind is often so far away.

His mind is preoccupied with a departed wife and son, a father hospitalised and in a coma, his organs failing. His secretary announces she is seriously ill and surely Dr Harding is about to push him out. But then a patient, Miss Blessing, who does not wear disguise, offers him a pill containing a concoction she swears will help. Robert takes it, and from then on he sees a world of dreams, or maybe he dreams his world. Robert finds solace in Alison's company. And he rediscovers music, unearths the clarinet he disposed of years ago and begins to explore nostalgia. But he is not eating properly, and can't sleep, and pills don't seem to help...

And then? Well, after losing his own plot, spending his waking hours attacking his own dreams or being attacked by them, there comes a strange revelation that provokes thought and a change of approach. He thus finds a life changed, and perhaps it might be his own.

Stormy Weather by Dermot Davis is an easy but thought-provoking read. Via the fiction of Robert Munro, it explores the blur between dream and reality, and the gaps between experience, perception and imagination. Dermot Davis's touch might be light, but the involvement with character his writing provides is surely profound.

Has lots of good tips with great examples

[[VIDEOID:39093261]]The approach covered is primarily concerned with the use of line, development of form, and the simplified design of anatomy. It doesn't go into contour drawing, shading and expression.

The many illustrated examples are aimed at helping students develop a feel for the form and volume of figures they draw. To that aspect, I think it does a very good job.

The use of simple geometric shapes as drawing guides are simple to understand. Not only that, Michael Hampton also builds onto to those simplified mannequins with lots of clearly illustrated muscles. The muscle groups are visualised very distinctly in the examples. They are colour-coded to bring attention those that affect form when the body is in different positions.

I like the part on finding landmarks -- bones that are near the skin. Colour-coded and shown very clearly, with rotating views from front to back.

The book does have head drawing but the focus is on the form rather than the details of the features, although the examples do show the details. It still covers enough for for anyone to draw a decent head.

One thing that's missing is the mention of figure proportions, like how many heads tall a body, length of an arm, etc. That I think will complete the book. There's nothing on bones and you won't learn how muscle works, but this isn't an anatomy reference book. That said, having an anatomy reference book to go along will be extremely helpful.

This is a useful book for artists learning to create and pose their own figures. Highly recommend for beginner and intermediate artists.

This will become your favorite figure drawing book

I read the first chapter of this book and took an online class by Michael Hampton. I really wanted to read further into the book, and I'm so glad I got it. This book will fast become a classic in figure drawing right along with Andrew Loomis.
First, the book is broken down into gesture drawing and landmarks of the body. This will help you structure the skeleton and will get you familiar with where the muscle masses will go later. Most importantly, gesture drawing will help you pose the body in a dynamic and natural way. The gesture is the best way to get more interesting drawings and the breakdowns in the book are easy to follow and easy to complete.
The book moves on to the structure of the head and how to detail the features. With these three parts, the body is complete, and you will walk away knowing where to place everything. Then it details the features of the body like the arms, legs, hands, and feet. The instruction ends with understanding how fabric works on the body and how to use light and shade.

The book has colorful and detailed illustrations and examples. The book is broken down in such a way that it will be easy to come back to sections and use those sections as reference.

My only complaint is that it took me so long to add this book to my collection.

The book is largely concerned with selecting/designing information security controls based on the advice in ISO/IEC 27002. Covering the same sequence of topics, the text expands on the standard's relatively high level descriptions of all manner of information security controls. The advice it dispenses is quite detailed, suited to mid-level/junior managers and specialists designing and implementing an Information Security Management System.

Now in its fifth edition, the authors have consistently updated the book to mention topical information security issues such as Advanced Persistent Threats (APT), virtualization, social media and cloud computing, even though these are not explicitly mentioned in the current ISO/IEC 27000-series standards.

The writing is clear and the guidance sensible.

Information security professionals working for ISO/IEC 27001 certified organizations recommend this book: it is a worthwhile supplement to the standards themselves.

Where did clocks come from?

For centuries men have tried to trace the origins of mechanical clocks, gear-driven and escapement controlled, without much success. While time keeping instruments go back to ancient Egypt, until the middle ages the devices were water driven or based on the length of time it took a candle to burn down. Then suddenly clockwork clocks with escapements and trains of gears appeared.

The answer to the mystery, Price says, is that we were looking in the wrong places. The birth and early development of clockwork was in scientific instruments such as planetariums, not in time keeping. After centuries of development in other fields, the principles were suddenly transferred to time-keeping mechanisms. One striking example of this alternate line of development is the Antikithera mechanism, a Hellenic mechanism for tracing the motions of the planets. Price shows similar examples from Hellenic times to the birth of true clocks in the 1300s. Along the way he traces the role of perpetual motion machines and the compass in the development of clocks.

About the Author

Stanley Rosner, Ph.D., is a Clinical Psychologist who has been in private practice for 40 years. He is a staff member in the Department of Psychiatry at Bridgeport Hospital, an adjunct medical staff member in the Department of Psychiatry at Norwalk Hospital, and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the National Academy of Neuropsychologists, the Society for Personality Assessment, and the Connecticut Psychological Association. He has served as President of the Connecticut Psychological Association and President of the Connecticut Society of Psychoanalytic Psychologists.

Patricia Hermes is a Connecticut-based author whose work includes 40 novels for young readers. Her awards for her books include the Smithsonian Notable Book, the C.S. Lewis Honor Book, the California Young Reader Medal and the New York Library Best Book for the Teen Years Award.

The book is extremely repetitive and although informed by psychonalytic studies, it is really not very helpful. I don't know why it is so expensive!

A lucid, candid and very helpful approach

I came across this book by chance and the very word "cycle" in the title called my attention. What a nice surprise it was! This is not your typical self-help book where the author claims to be authoritative and then goes on to offer a nicely packaged solution. It is a brilliant book where you can follow the author's own efforts to understand and help people who suffer from repeating self-defeating behaviors. It is an insightful journey where the author provides a unique view of the relationship doctor-patient in a psychotherapy. You will be challenged to put this book down.
