"At my job, people die," writes Theresa Brown, capturing both the burden and the singular importance of her profession. Brown, a former English professor at Tufts University, chronicles here her first year as an R.N. in medical oncology. As she does so, Brown illuminates the unique role of nurses in health care, giving us a deeply moving portrait of the day-to-day work nurses do: caring for the person who is ill, not just the illness itself.

Critical Care takes us with Brown as she struggles to tend to her patients' needs, both physical (the rigors of chemotherapy) and emotional (their late-night fears). Along the way, we see the work nurses do to fight for their patients' dignity, in spite of punishing treatments and an often uncaring hospital bureaucracy. We also see how a twelve-hour day of caring for the seriously ill gives Brown herself a deeper appreciation of what it means to be alive. Ultimately, this is a book about embracing life, whether in times of sickness or health.

About the Author

Theresa Brown, R.N., lives and works in the Pittsburgh area. She received her B.S.N. from the University of Pittsburgh and, during what she calls her past life, a Ph.D. in English from the University of Chicago. Brown is a regular contributor to the New York Times blog "Well." Her essay "Perhaps Death Is Proud; More Reason to Savor Life" was included in The Best American Science Writing 2009 and The Best American Medical Writing 2009. Critical Care is her first book. She lives with her husband, Arthur Kosowsky, their three children, and their dog.

A Passable but Unexceptional Nursing Memoir

Theresa Brown has made a mid-life career change, trading in her job as an English professor in order to begin anew in nursing. "I liked teaching, and at times I found in enjoyable enough, but I never felt passionately about it, for better or for worse," says Brown of her previous career, and given the serviceable but bland prose in which she tells her story one is well able to believe that English was never her passion.

Brown is extremely enthusiastic about her new job, and she is proud of what she does. Perhaps a little too proud. Her descriptions of grateful patients and her own tenacious, mongoose-like determination to do absolutely anything for them may give more modest readers a twinge of displaced embarrassment. Throughout the book she shares a number of patient stories with accompanying philosophizing. The stories of suffering oncology patients are inherently touching; her philosophy is of the Chicken Soup for the Soul variety, certainly deeply felt but nothing out of the common way.

The book, despite being written by a medical professional, is sprinkled with inaccurate statements and downright false medical information. According to Brown, cholera causes lethal dehydration that "only IV fluids can control". In reality, literally millions of lives have been saved with oral rehydration therapy as a treatment for cholera. She says, with "100 percent certainty", that no doctor in the United States ever collects feces for occult blood sampling. This actually happens quite regularly during rectal exams in family practice, and in many other circumstances. These may seem like minor quibbles but one does not like to see this type of factual error, especially as Brown heavily emphasizes the importance of patient education.

The best part of the book, by far, is the chapter entitled "A Day on the Wards". Brown really captures the reality of a day of nursing, making this chapter a great read for people considering a nursing career or for those who are interested in learning more about medicine in practice. Overall, the book is perhaps best for those that are very new to the world of medicine. Those who have read medical memoirs or been heavily involved in health care as patients or medical professionals may not find much that is novel here. However, one thing is very clear; Theresa Brown is no doubt an excellent and dedicated nurse.

Excellent book

This is an invaluable book for anyone wanting to learn about the properties and working qualities of this unique material. Special handling and a slightly different approach is needed to be successful. This book prepares the reader and contributes greatly to success. These Ceramic Handbooks are an excellent series and I would encourage anyone beginning or even considering using porcelain to read and own it. The information is both chemical and practical leaving the reader with a comprehensive knowledge not found in other books .This is just the book I was looking for and pairs beautifully with another in the series titled .......Coloring Clay by Jo Connell.

An unfortunate quality miss.

It is a true shame that Vogel's beautiful work and the stunning photography of it is printed on such poor paper stock. Additionally, the flimsy notecards are packaged with mismatched envelopes. They are not only awkwardly too large for the notecards, but also have a random yellow pattern on the front and back - making them feel like an afterthought.

New View on Life

I am 21 years old, and I was never a reader. All throughout high school I refused to read books for pleasure, I even refused to read the mandatory reading assignments. Also, I never made it past my first semester of college. However, I recently picked this book up out of curiosity. This book has totally changed my view on literature and value of education. Instead of coming home after work and sitting down and watching movie after movie, my new desire is to read a good book. Thankfully, "The Trial of Phillis Wheatley", has turned that routine around for me. Now, I want to read more often than watch television, I now want to read more to further my knowledge on subjects like history. I recommend this book to everyone, readers or not. Thank You Ronald Wheatley for this beautiful piece of art.

Must read historical book

The story of Phyllis Wheatley is presented by the author in a theatrical manner that made me feel as though I was actually present when Phyllis was challenged to prove the authorship of her poems because of her race. I became totally immersed in the issues of the times experiencing the tension of blacks verses whites, England verses America and the Colonial debates over British rule, abolition and taxation. Remarkably the Wheatley family did not treat Phyllis as a slave rather, they recognized and nurtured her talent and provided unprecedented education in literature. Without their generosity of spirit and the support of one of our Founding Fathers, John Hancock, America would not have been gifted with talents of our country’s first published black poet. I heartily recommend this book. The story was riveting, the writing artful, and the reader was left desiring more. Thank you for writing this wonderful book!

An Amazing Woman

Ronald Wheatley takes readers back before the American Revolution to introduce us to a young woman slave, who is both genius and poet. I had not heard of her and was so pleased to read about the first published African American woman poet. Through his characters, Wheatley's book expresses both British as well as American viewpoints and his writing reveals the delicate, worried emotions of the soft spoken slave. The author gives lots of data about those turbulent times before the play begins.

An excellent book for learning seduction and human interaction skills

This book far exceeded all my expectations. The author is obviously an expert in NLP and human behaviour, and has created a book you can learn from, not just read. I had previously bought several Pick Up Artist books from the web but all they gave you were lines you had to learn off by heart, and were only useful in bars. But the Master Seducer's Handbook covers the whole subject of seduction from how women think and how you can improve your conversation and flirting skills, right through to some great language techniques to get things happening for you. The book is extremely well written and fun to read, and doesn't preach at you or treat you like an idiot. Also the book is extremely respectful of women, which is a nice change from the typical seduction books. Plus, the chapters have practise drills that really improve your skills and your confidence. I had only read a third of the book before I found I couldn't wait to go out meeting girls.One thing you'll love about the book is how you can read the same chapter over and over again and learn new things each time. My advice is to any man is to buy this book right now. You're going to learn so much about how to charm and win women, and also how to persuade and influence all kinds of people.

A great book for learning how to get a girlfriend easily

The writer suggests that the easiest way to seduce women is to be the sort of man that women love to be seduced by. And that's exactly what he teaches in his book. A lot of it is devoted to how to develop the seductive language that women love to listen to, as well as how to use your body language and your voice and eye contact to get girls fascinated with you. What a change from the rubbish chat up lines the usual PUA books teach.

The book is written with an easy to understand set of rules. It has practical exercises to perform daily and teaches you how women think, act, and react to words, actions, and emotions... and how to make them feel and act the way you want.

Having now tried out some of the techniques, it looks as though it will not only help with women but will also help with dealing with all sorts of people in many different situations; business deals, selling, and networking with new contacts. Since reading it, I have tried it in a few different situations and found it has helped me develop relationships quickly and easily.

If you really want your confidence to soar and get the girl (s), you have always believed you deserve, you owe it to yourself to buy this book.

A great contribution to understanding Richard Rorty

Tartaglia's book is especially impressive for one reason; it is one of the first obviously non-partisan discussions on Rorty to appear. Rorty was such an iconoclast in the last years of his life and in the few years following his death, that nearly all discussion of him was highly partisan. All of it took him seriously of course, crude dismissials of Rorty don't need the length and sophistication that print allows. But still, you had to be either for him or against him, and that was a stark difference. Tartaglia's project is different, it is to simply understand him, and it deftly puts off the task of taking sides. Reading this book, it becomes clear just how hard it can be to understand everything Rorty is saying, including the great breadth of his knowledge and the diversity of his influences and references. Only when one has really mastered all these angles can one finally take a side, and that is something Tartaglia seems to leave to the reader.

Comprehensive coverage of the field

At the outset one might expect this book to be pure about motion planning or motion control. In reality the book is remarkably comprehensive in coverage of perception, planning and control with in-depth coverage of basic kinematics, basic planning mechanisms and applied estimation such as Kalman filters for robot perception. The book was written/edited by the first authors with in-depth coverage in particular chapters by the other authors. In the end it is a very coherent, up-to-date and comprehensive book. The book is written to have enough detail for a 1 term senior under-graduate or junior graduate course in robotics or as a reference for practitioners. Truly a great book

Excellent book

It is excellent book that gives contemporary presentation of the main topics of robots motion. It provides both clear explanations of the underlying principles and accurate algorithms and methods, which can be directly applied for the robots control. I use this book as one of the main sources for the course in mobile robots and as a handbook for research projects, and higly recommend it for everyone who deals with modern robotic systems.

Great book on mobile robotics

This is a great book on mobile robotics, a lot of methods are explained in the book and its writing is clear and easy to understand. I have used it on several undergraduate and graduate courses that I have taken, I fully recommend it.
