Galloping slave gals is one thing but when caught in the crinolines of the tipsy Amy Lawrence, our boy reckons it’s time to take a wife. With Amy’s sunhat over his courting tackle and her pap’s double barrel in his face, Sawyer’s proposal loses some of its romance. On his honeymoon Sidney abandons his bride, and with the deadly jayhawker Huck Finn and Finn’s black daddy Jim Watson, he battles bushwhackers with pistols and knives through the streets of St. Louis. And what the hell was Huckleberry doing on the honeymoon?
In a hissing scandal, Tom is appointed to West Point but disappears down the Mississippi leaving poor Becky in a family way. Judge Thatcher is outraged, Becky is banished, Aunt Polly swoons, and a gleeful Sid poaches Tom’s place at the Academy. Every inch the soldier, except for the honor part, Sawyer clashes with the deadly slave-master, Cadet Calhoun Brassard, as the Corps of Cadets divide North and South. Brassard and Sawyer savage each other in a wild horserace, slash at vicious saber play, and meet with pistols at dawn in a brutal duel that earns Sidney the first of his unworthy laurels in a lifetime of fraudulent glory. Surviving through treachery with a pistol ball in his breast, Cadet Sawyer becomes West Point’s own ACE OF HEARTS.

Interesting take on Tom Sawyer s brother

Sidney Sawyer, Tom s younger brother, is a unique character. In this volume Sidney goes from childhood to a young man at West Point with many wildly entertaining adventures in between. The history of the antebellum U. S. is incorporated in the book in an interesting way. Ace of Hearts is an excellent blend of humor with historical fiction. The author knows his history. Definitely a good read with quite a few laughs! Try it!

Very true to the historical time frame.

The book is well written and easy to read and understand even though he uses phrases and terms that are appropriate to the time period. I learned about life at West Point in the 1850s, how the issue of slavery divided families and states, and a great deal about life in general at this time. If you like history, especially the Civil War era, you will enjoy this book. I look forward to reading the rest of the series!

Great Book!

We got this book to use for our BIG EVENT at church (vacation Bible school). We are doing Group's Egypt theme and this had LOTS of great ideas to use. It has simple projects for younger kids and more in depth projects for older kids. Great history and pictures. Worth the purchase.

excellent ancient egyptian resource

We checked out every Egyptian craft book from our library for a homeschool unit (grade 5, and this was among the top 3 that we actually used. The projects in this book are not cute crafts like in many of the other books; they can be used to really help understand the history. Our favorite project in this book was the "wesekh collar." The book actually gives a lot of background information about jewelry and beads and shows examples other than the project, so you get a feel for the variety that existed. I love that the book makes an attempt to replicate actual objects while still using readily available materials. While the book suggested plastic beads and copper wire, we used stone beads and that led to a whole discussion about what types of metals, minerals and gems might have been available to the egyptians.

The book also has the best "papyrus paper" instructions for simulating papyrus. It is the only book that I found that used thin strips laid in an overlapping weave, which illustrates the process rather than the end result. (There are many videos on the web that show papyrus being made - pretty cool to watch before starting this project!)

Most of the projects in this book would be best suited to kids 9 and up. Younger kids would most likely need some assistance. My 7 year-old did many of the projects with us and did need help.

Great book; DIFFICULT crafts

We are doing a summer homeschool unit on ancient Egypt, and the book we used for the majority of our crafts was Kaleidoscope Kids "Pyramids!". We checked this Carmela Van Vleet book out of the library, but the crafts were way above the skill level of my kids. This would be better for older (junior high? high school?) kids. I like my children to work on their craft projects without a lot of help from Mom, but thecrafts in this book were very parent-intensive.

Also, most of the crafts required uncommon items -- 2 cups of sawdust, for example, or grated beeswax, or a long straight tree branch cut into five equal lengths. See what I mean? Better for big kids (with a big budget).

Great vocabulary words on every topic; very good glossary; good index.

Uncovering Innovative Work Place Potential

Creativity is power. The author makes a compelling case that in today's complex and chaotic environment, it is essential to solve what increasingly seems like the unsolvable.

The author, an emeritus USC professor of management, breaks his treatment of creativity into four parts:

1. Learning to harness your creative intelligence.

2. Exploring opportunities to apply your creativity.

3. Helping others recognize and use their creativity.

4. Creating open environments to support creative endeavors.

To me the most practical part of the book is a test instrument which identifies a person's creative potential. The 25-question test determines the taker's aptitude for the four basic creative styles:

1. Innovative

2. Imaginative

3. Intuitive

4. Inspirational

With the problems facing business and society, it is surprising more effort is not made to identify and encourage creative thinkers and thinking.

Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, "A mind that is stretched to a new idea never returns to its original dimensions."

Given the number and depth of the problems facing humankind, it is surprising to me that we continually resort to the same, worn-out and tired solutions.

Poorly written platitudes

This is a very poorly written book, filled with pointless drivel (" Throughout human history, creativity has been the subject of interpretation and speculation") and very poor editing ("Jan Piirto's research studies on creativity and found that it is a natural activity). Do not waste your time with this thoroughly uncreative, uninspiring book.

The best parts of this book are providing an understanding that there are different kinds of creativity and being able to assess one's creative potential, the chapter on education and how essential the creative process is for learning, and how to use our creativity to understand and solve problems in our turbulent society. Creativity helps in taking the risks that improve problem solving.
It is absolutely essential to develop our creativity to our fullest potential in order to be successful in our careers as well as in our personal lives. Creativity helps us see more options in every situation that confronts us.
For today's business people and for educators, I believe this book is an absolute must!

Great Introduction To Critical Thinking

This book is straight-forward, easy to read and full of fun excercises as well as tons of quotes from notable historical personages and essays by leaders of the advertising field. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning about critcal thinking or anyone who is adept at critical thinking but wishes to improve their skills. The excercises provide endless practice and food for thought.

Why isn't this required reading at High Schools??

Buy it to improve yourself and society as a whole!

This book is odd

This was a text used for a critical thinking class (bachelors level) and the best way to explain it is that it feels like there should be a book the read before or with this book? It is informative but there are some parts that didn't make a lick of sense. It may not have helped that the instructor didn't teach/explain beyond the book but the book is not something to take on without guidance or for fun unless you are a masochist. It is thought provoking but I'm guessing there are better critical thinking texts out there.
