I wish I could take this book and go back in time and teach this to my younger self.

Besides learning about how to lead a life with goals, it also teaches some of the smartest strategies for leading a life with no space for mediocrity. An insightful and engaging book

As one not very knowledgeable about gang activity and gang culture, I began Dr. Howell’s book with some trepidation as it had all the surface appearance of a long, boring, academic tome. I was quite wrong. The book provides fascinating insights into the history and evolution of street gangs in the United States covering almost two hundred years. Of particular interest is chapter three which vividly describes the emergence and transformation of gangs – illuminating why they form, how they grow, and their special appeal to disenfranchised urban youth. The book also dispels some myths about gangs and offers some promising approaches for combating their influence.
Overall, Dr. Howell does a truly remarkable job of synthesizing current gang research, theory, and data into a clear, comprehensive, and engaging book.

ESL teacher Marianna Pascal presents Say It Better in English: Useful Phrases for Work & Everyday Life, a supplementary self-study guide for anyone learning English as a second language. Say It Better in English offers more than 300 American English phrases commonly used at work, on the phone, at the store, or with friends and co-workers. Each phrase has a straightforward definition, has two different sentences using the phrase in context, and an illuminating black-and-white cartoon showing the phrase in action. For example, the phrase "in a row" has the definition "one thing directly after another thing" and a cartoon of a man saying "You were late 3 days last week, and 3 days in a row this week," while pointing to a calendar with three consecutive days marked. Simple crossword puzzles to help the reader practice their new vocabulary round out this invaluable guide to adopting and understanding fluent American English speech patterns.

Say It Better in English - a Great source and way to learn everyday phrases

The format of this book makes learning the phrases a lot of fun. The cartoons are delightful, the definitions are clear and concise, and the examples are clearly from everyday life. I also like the addition of grammar points such as where to put pronouns as opposed to nouns in two-word (or more) verb phrases. I was disappointed not to find an index. However, the Phrase Guide for this book, which is available free from the publisher's website, lists the expressions in alphabetical order, to which page numbers can be added as a person works through the book. Overall, I think this is a charming text which learners of English as a Second Language will find easy and fun to use.
