The Declining Significance of Gender? From Russell Sage Foundation

The last half-century has witnessed substantial change in the opportunities and rewards available to men and women in the workplace. While the gender pay gap narrowed and female labor force participation rose dramatically in recent decades, some dimensions of gender inequality—most notably the division of labor in the family—have been more resistant to change, or have changed more slowly in recent years than in the past. These trends suggest that one of two possible futures could lie ahead: an optimistic scenario in which gender inequalities continue to erode, or a pessimistic scenario where contemporary institutional arrangements persevere and the gender revolution stalls.

In The Declining Significance of Gender?, editors Francine Blau, Mary Brinton, and David Grusky bring together top gender scholars in sociology and economics to make sense of the recent changes in gender inequality, and to judge whether the optimistic or pessimistic view better depicts the prospects and bottlenecks that lie ahead. It examines the economic, organizational, political, and cultural forces that have changed the status of women and men in the labor market. The contributors examine the economic assumption that discrimination in hiring is economically inefficient and will be weeded out eventually by market competition. They explore the effect that family-family organizational policies have had in drawing women into the workplace and giving them even footing in the organizational hierarchy. Several chapters ask whether political interventions might reduce or increase gender inequality, and others discuss whether a social ethos favoring egalitarianism is working to overcome generations of discriminatory treatment against women.

Although there is much rhetoric about the future of gender inequality, The Declining Significance of Gender? provides a sustained attempt to consider analytically the forces that are shaping the gender revolution. Its wide-ranging analysis of contemporary gender disparities will stimulate readers to think more deeply and in new ways about the extent to which gender remains a major fault line of inequality.

From Booklist
Brody, a broken-down street musician, finds his world changed forever when he meets Talia, a teenage ghost who tells him that he will help her complete the task that allows her entrance into heaven. Though the first part of Crilley’s six-part story is short, he packs in a lot of details, especially in his amazingly realistic, manga-influenced art. The setting—an unidentified future city partially in ruins—is a masterpiece of drawing, and Brody and the other characters are equally well crafted (readers are shown that process through character sketches in the back of the book). The story is more than a match for the art: humor, action, and mystery butt up against the reality of Brody’s sad life, giving him the opportunity to change who he is. Rather than starting with a hero, Crilley builds one from the ground up, encouraging readers to join him in the journey. The surprise ending wraps up this introductory volume and leaves readers eager for round two. Grades 7-12. --Snow Wildsmith

Mark Crilley returns with Brody's Ghost!
By TuxedoWerewolf
I just got my copy of Brody's Ghost in the mail today, and the first thing I noticed that the book overall was thinner than Crilley's other manga Miki Falls.
But that doesn't change my opinion of the manga book. Brody's Ghost is amazing!

I don't know where to begin with the detail in each panel; every detail is just astounding!
Every location, every person, everything is just packed with amazing detail!
The realistic manga style that is used in the book is crazy good; it slightly resembles the Death Note manga!

The story is very good so far; Brody, a poor man who lives in his run down apartment, struggles to get through life, until one day he meets Talia, a deceased girl in the form of a ghostly figure, who tells Brody of his psychic powers that he was not aware that he had.
I cannot go any further than that; I do not want to spoil it.

Mark Crilley has done an extremely great job creating Brody's Ghost. It truly is an amazing book, although it's the only one available at the time.
I do not know when the next book will be out, but I know I will be pre-ordering it ASAP!

If you are a fan of Mark Crilley's work Akiko or Miki Falls, then Brody's Ghost is something that you will LOVE! Buy it now!

Very, very enjoyable
By booklyreads
As someone who has read Miki Falls, I was pleased to see that Brody's Ghost is very different. Mark Crilley has a broad imagination, and the stories have no similarities. Regardless, the art remains fantastic and the story is just as (if not more so) engaging as the story of his last series.

It's a short read, but it felt well-developed and it's definitely worth it for the price. The characters are intriguing, and I'm already anticipating the sequel! I would check it out.

Psychology for Medicine, by Susan Ayers, Richard de Visser

This first of its kind comprehensive textbook covers all the psychology you need to know as an undergraduate medical student. After an introduction, the text is split into four key sections that should suit all curricula:

  • Psychology and Health covers core health psychology topics such as stress, symptom perception, health behavior and chronic illness.
  • Basic Foundations of Psychology covers topics from biological, developmental, cognitive and social psychology that are relevant to medicine.
  • Body Systems covers psychological research specific to body systems, including cardiovascular, respiratory, gastro-intestinal, immunology and reproduction.

Review
As the fundamental importance of psychological aspects of medical practice becomes ever more evident, and a correspondingly greater knowledge of psychology is required of medical graduates by bodies such as the UK General Medical Council, books like this one must become essential reading for all medical students. (Michael Sharpe MD, FRCP FRCPsych,)

A welcome text that fulfills a niche for books on behavioural and social sciences written for medical students. Other books provide an introductory overview but a more detailed textbook is needed which clearly demonstrates a contemporary evidence base for the role of psychology in medicine. The book achieves this. The systems based approach and the focus on psychological skills are also welcomed. (Judith Anne Rock???)

It's a great textbook, the application to Medicine is nicely outlined and the case studies illustrating the points further are brilliant. It's easy to read and follow and really highlights the importance of Psychology in Medicine. I will definitely be recommending this text to my students! (Dr Harbinder Sandhu???)

At last, a good comprehensive textbook on psychology for medical students. I'll be sure to recommend this to my students. (Katie Lock???)

Mediocre text. The book is wordy and poor at defining and explaining various terms. The authors also use the terms stress and stressors interchangeably. This is very annoying. The book also lack definitions of the terms it uses.

Familiar Evil, by Rannah Gray

Familiar Evil goes inside an investigation that sent shockwaves from Louisiana to London. When a young British businessman coincidentally connects with an American public relations consultant, the two end up working with authorities on an international criminal case that builds to an explosive conclusion.
--
With raw honesty and unparalleled access, Familiar Evil tells the story of one man's international search for a child predator–how perseverance, courage, and the enduring belief in good over evil prove the power of one.

Twenty years before this story begins, a hung jury in England allowed Scott Rogers, principal at the performing arts academy, to avoid prison on charges of sexual assault against a young student and quietly slip out of the country. Ethan, a successful businessman, husband, father, and former academy student, always knew the jury got it wrong. He knew his classmates had told the truth, and he knew Rogers would continue to abuse until somebody stopped him.

For 13 years, Ethan searched for Rogers. His efforts finally paid off when he found Rogers’ name in an online search, referenced in the letter to the editor of a daily newspaper in Louisiana. He took a bold step. He emailed its author, public relations consultant Rannah Gray. This is their story.

For the next 365 days, Ethan and Rannah worked to expose the truth, becoming confidential informant to a federal investigation that uncovered how Rogers had used deceit and fraud to gain U.S. citizenship. With colorful criminal defense attorney Nathan Fisher and gutsy paralegal Mary Jane Marcantel, the foursome discovered that Rogers had brought several teenagers to the U.S., exploiting some as sex slaves. Claiming friendships with a powerful federal judge, The head of State Police, and the local Sheriff, Rogers became increasingly brazen. As law enforcement agencies in two countries were working to stop him, he was surreptitiously moving to adopt more young boys into his home from state custody.

Familiar Evil reveals never-before-told details of the hunt for Rogers. Along the way, licensed clinical social worker Leslie Todd provides chilling insight into the minds of sexual predators who seek power and control over their victims.

This is a story that sent shockwaves across two continents– the story that can be told only by those inside the investigation and the heroic British survivors of Scott Rogers’ abuse.

Acclaim:

Rannah Gray’s book is fascinating, well written, and meticulously researched. But most important, it helps spread the message that there is a secret, worldwide epidemic of child abuse… nurtured in the darkness of denial, shame, and perversion. And protecting our children agains “Stranger Danger” is not enough.

You will never want to put this book down!
By Juan C. Pisani
This book is so juicy! I can't put it down. I have never read a book this big before "Familiar Evil". EVER!
But this book is so good that it feels the smallest of books. I am actually getting sad the thought that I am almost done since it has been my companion for the last 2 weeks everywhere I went. I would take it with me to work all the time, knowing it was there for me just in case I wanted to hide a read more pages. I'm I never got caught. The story of this book is very real and very sad. I, myself, am a victim of sexual abuse when I was very young. It is very easy to read because of the short chapters and very well written. I hope this book gets picked up for a movie or even a short series format. Congratulations to Rannah Gray for bringing this story forward and your persistence in getting all the facts right. I will buy more copies so I can send to all my friends and family.

An Excellent Read!!!!
By G. M. Smith
When I heard this book was being written I could not wait to get my hands on it. I didn't know everything that happened and I wanted more details. I could not believe I knew some of the people duped by Scott Rogers in this thriller. My daughter worked at The Silver Sun during this time and she was directly affected financially. I couldn't understand how a fellow from the UK had a show on tv early Sunday mornings! It's quite a page turner and it's so hard to believe we local people knew who most of those who are in her book. Scott Rogers was evil and Rannah made sure she did the right thing and kept him from hurting other children. It started by writing one letter to the editor and naming Scott Rogers. The rest is history... Excellent read, and I highly recommend it!

Familiar Evil is a captivating read written by one of the people who helped expose a pedophile predator who masqueraded as an upstanding citizen of Baton Rouge. The number of prominent people who were fooled by Scott Rogers is totally amazing. This should be lesson to us all.
