Grade 9 Up—Crutcher's fans will relish the reunion with some familiar characters in this collection of three stories set in the Pacific Northwest and thematically united around anger. "Kyle Manard and the Craggy Face of the Moon" takes Angus Bethune (Athletic Shorts, 1991) and Sarah Byrnes (Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, 1993) on a road trip to Reno to confront the mother who abandoned her years before. In "Montana Wild," student journalist Montana West (The Sledding Hill, 2005) defends her article on medicinal marijuana in a very public shouting match with the right-wing school-board president, who also happens to be her father. "Meet Me at the Gates, Marcus James" unexpectedly binds gay Marcus James, sole black student at his high school, with complexly devout Christian Matt Miller (Deadline, 2007) and sympathetic teacher John Simet (Whale Talk, 2001), when racist football players hang a pink noose on Marcus's locker. Subthemes packed into the mix include foster care, sexual awakening, body image, and hope, played out through lively plot and dialogue. Too many stereotypical characters weaken the stories' impact, including blindly bureaucratic school administrators and knee-jerk conservative Christians. The unnecessary conceit that all the characters attend an anger management course led by Mr. Nak (Ironman, 1995, all HarperCollins) remains undeveloped, and the stories end too abruptly. About the Author

Chris Crutcher has written nine critically acclaimed novels, an autobiography, and two collections of short stories. Drawing on his experience as a family therapist and child protection specialist, Crutcher writes honestly about real issues facing teenagers today: making it through school, competing in sports, handling rejection and failure, and dealing with parents. He has won three lifetime achievement awards for the body of his work: the Margaret A. Edwards Award, the ALAN Award, and the NCTE National Intellectual Freedom Award. Chris Crutcher lives in Spokane, Washington.

Crutcher Remains True to Sitting Back and Telling the Story and Watching What Happens Next

ANGRY MANAGEMENT contains new stories with characters from previous Chris Crutcher books. Crutcher explains in his foreword that he has been "...asked over and over again whether or not there will be a sequel to STAYING FAT FOR SARAH BYRNES or WHALE TALK..." He goes on to explain that he doesn't "...generally get the notion to write a sequel to a novel that I've already taken two years to write. But during those two years I always fall in love with my characters, and I loved revisiting some of them in this other, shorter form." Crutcher presents a tribute to his characters and his fans in this new book.

Sarah Byrnes was physically abused by her father at a young age when he pressed her face against a burning stove. Then Sarah's mother abandoned her, leaving behind a girl emotionally and physically scarred. She sought after her mother once for an explanation, but left uncomforted and unfulfilled. Now with the help of Angus Bethune, an overweight and low self-esteem teenager with unconventional parents, Sarah once again seeks to confront her mother and find some closure. Along the way, they establish a stronger bond and perhaps fill an empty spot in each other's lives. The ending to their story isn't necessarily perfect, but that doesn't mean it's not happy.

Montana West likes to push the envelope in everything she does. Whether it's fighting with her adoptive parents or writing articles on hot-button issues for the school newspaper, Montana is not afraid to speak her mind. When censorship from the school's administration rears its ugly head, she takes a break to write an article about the school's football team, the one topic in which she could care less. However, she doesn't expect to fall for bad-boy Trey Chase and his irresistible charm. Together they decide to fight back against the censorship of Montana's legalized marijuana article and run into the last person they thought would stand in their way: the chairman of the school board --- and Montana's adoptive father. Now Montana must decide where her loyalties lie and what she really believes.

Marcus James has every reason to be angry. He not only happens to be one of the few black students in a prejudiced inland Northwest high school, he is also the only gay black student in a prejudiced inland Northwest high school. Marcus takes everything in stride, though, and is counting down the days until he can escape to college and a brighter future. One day he shows up to class with a pink noose hanging around his neck, and a hate crime is investigated by the administration in a sloppy, administrative way. At a school assembly where Marcus is singled out, an unlikely ally emerges in Matt Miller, state champion wrestler, who stands up against the moronic handling of the situation. Matt refuses to let the hate crime fall by the wayside, and Marcus is simply trying to survive another day. The ultimate outcome is not what either person expects.

While die-hard Crutcher fans may be uneasy about the new settings and storylines for some of his infamous characters, they should be comforted by the fact that he has taken great care to keep everything true to form and style from his original creations. While some of his characters and situations may be shocking, Crutcher doesn't write these stories for their shock value. Instead, he remains true to sitting back and telling the story and watching what happens next. Crutcher's protagonists have always seemed very real to me, and although their lives may be a mess sometimes, they always seem to find hope in every situation.

Another winner from Chris Crutcher

Although I was already a fan of Chris Crutcher's work, this book shot to the top of my TBR pile when it was challenged by a parent in South Carolina. Because of Crutcher's willingness to take on a host of societal issues, his books are often challenged--and teens love them. I'm not generally a huge fan of short stories, but I enjoyed this collection of three novellas and the chance to revisit characters from several of Crutcher's previous novels. Highly recommended.

The characters in the three stories are loosely bound together by Mr. Nak's Angry Management group.

"Kyle Maynard and the Craggy Face of the Moon" features Sarah Byrnes and Angus Bethune. Sarah bears her burn-scarred face like a shield to protect herself from becoming too involved with anyone and Angus uses his girth and his sense of humor in a similar way. The teens become closer as they embark on a road trip to find Sarah's mother, who abandoned her to her abusive father.

In "Montana Wild," Montana West writes the kind of stories for her school newspaper that never get published, thanks to conservative administrators backed up by the right-wing head of the school board who happens to be her adoptive father. When her latest story, about medical marijuana, gets shot down, she is asked to write a human interest piece on a football player. Trey Chase is not a stereotypical "dumb jock" and Montana is drawn to him right away. His grandmother, Mari, is dying of cancer and uses marijuana to ease her pain and nausea. Mari suggests that Montana not give up on her medical marijuana article. Even knowing that the school paper won't publish it, Montana decides to push the issue and get it before the school board. Mari says, "You don't have to win to win. Just keep putting it in front of them. The truth rises." The showdown between Montana and Maxwell West is inevitable.

The third story, "Meet Me at the Gates, Marcus James" was my favorite. Marcus is the only African American student at his high school, which is run by football-obsessed bigots. Not only is Marcus whip-smart and outspoken, but he is also gay. When he strolls into Mr. Simet's U.S. Government class wearing the pink noose that had been hanging on his locker, no one misses its significance. Mr. Simet is supportive, but cautions Marcus about the statement he's making by wearing the noose. When the school administrators call an assembly to "address" the bigotry, Matt Miller, a devout Christian, calls them out for appearing to address the issue, while making it impossible to resolve. I love this character, who embodies the best Christian behavior, rather than the holier-than-thou brand of Christianity that permeates American culture. He stands up and tells the truth, which unleashes unforeseen consequences and connects him with Marcus forever. Marcus' father is another interesting character because, even though he understands what it's like to be hated for something he can't control (his race), his initial reaction to learning that Marcus is gay is anger. He eventually accepts his son and has this to say, "You know, teacher man, bein' homosexual isn't somethin' my boy chose. He just was. Somebody's readin' the good book all wrong. You ask me, God creates it, God loves it. Simple as that." Amen.

Genuine stories for real world teens

The stories in `Angry Management' follow characters Chris Crutcher has already used in his novels, which I think is a great premise on its own, because we all want to know more about our favorite characters after the novel is over, and this gives us a nice taste of what they're up to in a different setting. Every story is heartfelt and genuinely emotional. Crutcher does a good job of keeping his characters' voices true to the voices of the teens they're representing and that not only makes this a good read but an excellent young adult novel, or compilation in this case. Each of the stories focuses on a different challenge of adolescence, not all of which can be related to directly by every `young adult' who picks up this book to read, but he gives a wide enough range that I think almost anyone could pick up this book and relate to someone on a personal level.

I have to admit that, personally, this isn't a book I'd consider one of my favorite young adult reads, but from the `teacher' perspective of whether or not this would be a book to recommend to students/use in the classroom it's definitely something I'd pass along. While there is always the overpowering issue of censorship which may be an issue regarding this book being taught in the classroom, it's one I would like to include if this were a perfect world. It provides an insight into different situations and families students may not otherwise see, and it is genuine enough that students who are living in these worlds themselves aren't going to feel a falseness or pandering that we sometimes see in young adult lit. Each short story could very easily be taught on its own, and it gives a great character preview for Crutcher's longer novels featuring the same characters, (and I love being able to recommend a book that leads my students to want to read more!).

A Side of WWII Not widely Written about, Showing a Whole Different Perspective....Romania

There are two books in this series Tsura and House of Stone.I read the first and was so happy that there was a second and wish there was a third.I have read a lot of stories about WWII and from many perspectives and from many countries and religions but this is the first that I have read about Romania. Actually there are very few written about Romania and Hungry for that matter. I see similar patterns in the two countries but we are fortunate to have an Author that loves research and on top of that she actually married a Man that was born and raised in Romania.So not only did we get the benefit of her research but we received a first hand account of what the country was actually like. I felt like I was on a lesson of life reading these books a very thought provoking history lesson that I know in my mind I said I did not know that, more than a few times. I take away knowledge that I never had before. I have to say I also lived over 16 years in Europe and never knew any of this, I was there when the Wall fell and I was in Nuremberg, where many of the people from the eastern block countries flowed into in the days of new found freedom. It was an amazing time in History. This part of my review just covers the amazing job that the Author did by bringing some of these facts to the surface. I do not judge the people in any of these countries for what happened for a few bad apples I do not believe that all should be labeled. War is War. We just pray that right prevails.
To the Story oh, what a complicated and thoughtful story this was. It brought together the plight of the (Roma) Gypsies and raised awareness of the prejudices surrounding a group of people that were then and most likely still today looked down upon. The People that some thought were one thing that really were working under cover to help those that were hunted, while maintaining what the higher up wanted to see and did all the things at great danger to themselves, thankfully we still have people that will do this for other Human beings.
This is a Love Story, but also a journey and lessons learned along the way. Both books are fast paced well written and a very good story line and better than all a good History Lesson I am more grateful for that than anything. I absolutely love it when an Author brings fact onto there stories and Heather did just that.Thank You Good writing and research and Perfect History Lesson. Folks read Both Books, well worth your time.

Perfect ending to Heather's two book series

OOOOOH the torture!! Perfect ending to Heather's two book series. Man, Heather just puts your heart through the ringer in these two books. The love story is so deep and beautiful. She had me talking to these characters like a crazy man watching a sports game, and then coming back for more of the sweet torture. Heather's writing only gets better as she continues to establish herself in the fiction world. IF you haven't read any of her other books... hello, look them up now!

House of Stone was like a freight train. I couldn't put it down. This is a book that happens in a historical setting, but it's more about the characters and their emotions. So much happens in it. Wow. It's a book you'll think about long after you finish it.

After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are not publishing a major statement in the form of three works which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building, and planning, which will, we hope, replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, A Pattern Language, and The Oregon Experiment.

At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation fo the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people.

This book is the master plan for the University of Oregon, and is now being implemented at that university; but it shows at the same time how any community the size of a university or small town might go about designing its own future environment-with all members of the community participating personally. It is a concrete example at the Center's theories in practice, showing in simple detail, with numerous illustrations, how to implement six guiding principles: organic order, participation, piecemeal growth, patterns, diagnosis, and coordination.

About the Author

Christopher Alexander is a builder, craftsman, general contractor, architect, painter, and teacher. He taught from 1963 to 2002 as Professor of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, and is now Professor Emeritus. He has spent his life running construction projects, experimenting with new building methods and materials, and crafting carefully articulated buildings--all to advance the idea that people can build environments in which they will thrive.

Acting on his deeply-held conviction that, as a society, we must recover the means by which we can build and maintain healthy living environments, he has lived and worked in many cultures, and built buildings all over the world.

Making neighborhoods, building-complexes, building, balustrades, columns, ceilings, windows, tiles, ornaments, models and mockups, paintings, furniture, castings and carvings--all this has been his passion, and is the cornerstone from which his paradigm-changing principles have been derived.

Building an educational community

The Oregon Experiment is one of a series of influential volumes on architecture and social design published by Christopher Alexander and his colleagues in the 1970s. While the most well-known volume in the series, A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, and Construction, develops general principles for the design of social spaces at all scales, The Oregon Experiment applies those principles to a specific case: the campus of the University of Oregon.
If you are looking for an example of a specific campus plan, however, you will not find it here. Central to Alexander's approach is the notion that communities should not create fixed master plans, but rather should develop a common pattern language, and then apply it organically, in a piecemeal fashion, as needs arise. The book talks as much about this process of planning as it does about individual construction projects. Whenever a need arises (expansion of a building, addition of a door, creation of a green) people consult their pattern language and build something to suit the space and satisfy the need. Because everyone follows the agreed-upon language, the new parts harmonize with those that already exist (or replace earlier, poorly-designed structures).
If you have enjoyed studying Alexander's patterns in A Pattern Language, you will find here a collection of new ones that are specific to a university setting, including "University Population," "University Shape and Diameter," "Departments of 400," "Local Administration," "Classroom Distribution," and about a dozen more. Although he clearly draws on ideas from British universities in many cases, he unaccountably does not include one of the fundamental features of the British model, namely the residential college of 500 (or so) within the larger institution. (Although he does include aspects of this pattern under the heading "Small Student Unions.") As always, Alexander's pattern descriptions are clear, blunt, and thought-provoking.
The question that most readers will want to have answered is, "Does all this really work?" When the volume was written, of course, the process was just getting under way, and so we cannot know from this book alone whether everything described was successful or has been sustained over the long term. From what I've seen of campus master planning in public universities, it often turns out in the end to have less to do with creating good educational environments than it does with kowtowing to the local chamber of commerce and lining the pockets of already-rich trustees. But just because something is difficult doesn't mean it shouldn't be made the goal. If Alexander or someone at the University of Oregon were to produce a sequel, "The Oregon Experiment 25 Years On," I'm sure it would meet with a warm reception.

A frustrating piece of vapourware

As a software designer and as somebody who lives and works in buildings in cities, I find the ideas in some of Alexander's other books on architecture and design - The Timeless Way of Building and A Pattern Language - very interesting and appealing. They are a brave attempt to point to a more human, community-oriented way of doing things.
I had high hopes that The Oregon Experiment would describe a concrete example of whether these ideas worked when they were put into practice. It does nothing of the kind. It describes an interesting thought experiment in participatory design and tries to present this as a vindication of the Pattern Language concepts. But nowhere does it even mention whether the design it describes was ever actually implemented, much less whether it worked from the inhabitants' point of view.
It is very easy for a design team to get carried away with what a great design they have on paper. I've done it loads of times. That enthusiasm tells us nothing about whether a design is actually going to be a success.
I know Alexander later moved from academia and started trying to put his ideas into practice on actual building projects. A book on his real experiences and how well the original ideas stood up to the cold light of reality would be fascinating and important. The Oregon Experiment isn't that book.

Short summary of the important stuff, mistakes to learn from

The good news is that this book is a short summary of what most people

will find important when they apply patterns either in the field of architecture

or in their own field of design. It provides insight into Alexander's theory

of economics--a stance which caused him to be unfavorably labeled as a

socialist when these ideas were taking form.

Patterns, in this book, are almost a footnote to the broader ideas of

design, of economics, and of socially coordinated construction that

form the core of Alexander's exposition here. The economics form a

compelling argument for a process of piecemeal growth. Alexander gives

practical advice on how to administer the social process, including the

creation of a community pattern board that oversees the introduction of

new patterns into the community language, and the retirement of old

ones. By putting the pattern mantra aside, this book helps the reader

get beyond the point where they are looking for patterns in their own right

to provide the answer to every design question, and pushes the reader

to think at the level of the foundations.

The bad news is that the book takes the reader into a couple of miscues.

Alexander would later bitterly recant the role this book accords to the

architect. Architects should be master builders rather than the font of

design ideas. The architecture role emerged in the Oregon Experiment

to lend the project an air of conventionality and credibility, a compromise

that kept the project from achieving its goals.

Current tidbits of retrospective literature try to make sense of the experiment;

some claim it succeeded (in spite of those aspects Alexander felt were

wrong-headed) and some claim it failed. Grabow's biography of

Alexander (Christopher Alexander: The Search for a New Paradigm in

Architecture) features some choice words about the miscues in this

experiment. Taken with the retrospective Grabow brings us, this book

provides a perspective on patterns that is completely absent from the

other books in this series. Some of these, such as the foundations in

economics, are there for the picking. To reap some of the other insights

requires study that goes beyond casual reading, but such study is

appropriate to the depth of insight it will afford, and you owe it to

yourself to explore it. These insights are crucial for making patterns

work in a practical way in a social setting.

If you want to learn about patterns, and you want to start with an

Alexandrian book, I think this is the one you start with. Get the big

picture first, in the context of the underlying principles, and come

back for the pattern details later in A Pattern Language, and for the

artist's artistic exposition of his art in The Timeless Way of Building.

Professional advice expressed through great writing

This is by far the best social media marketing related book that I have ever came across. I have been an internet marketer for years and it's how I make my primary income and I get sick and tired of finding social media books that are either completely useless, re-written information or are small in substance and number of pages. Thankfully, this book doesn't follow this negative trend and I now have some more hope in the Kindle marketplace.

The information is professional and well-researched. I have been in the game for years and even though I knew some of the advice, there is still plenty that I can only wish I knew years before - it would have saved me a lot of time and effort and I hope that it helps beginners in a way that I can only dream of. If you're looking to skip all of the nonsense and find a great social media book expressed by a clear, concise writing style that skips out all of the filler, then I highly suggest you check this out

Great Social Media Reference!

I had read another one of Tim Kitchen's books, How to Get to the Top of Google, and I was interested to see if this one would measure up. It was fantastic! I run three different websites, and each one is doing some things with social media, but the owners would like to do more. This book would appeal to businesses that are completely new to social media, as well as those who are already using it but need to delve in a little deeper. Full of concrete, helpful advice, the book gives examples of companies who are both doing it right and who are getting it wrong as far as social media, as well as exercises to help you develop your own plan. The book is divided into sections for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google+, and each section describes how to make the most of that particular media, along with things that could go wrong. As I read it, my mind was reeling with all of the possibilities, along with the opportunities we were missing by not implementing some of the book's ideas. The authors also offer a free social media audit to readers. Overall, this book is totally worth the purchase!

A definite read for a person just getting into social media. I've dealt with these sites on a limited basis and picked this book up to expand my knowledge about how social media marketing works. It definitely opened a few doors for me although it would definitely help a person just starting out because it goes into how to set up accounts, creating business pages, etc. Stuff I already knew.

Jon Hop tops himself once again in his 4th installment of the "So You Want to Play Go?" series. Aimed at dan-level players, Hop illustrates advanced topics with pristine clarity, making the reader wonder, "Why haven't I realized before how simple this concept was?"

It's hard to believe that such a feat is possible in teaching dan-level techniques in Go, but Hop's approach is a winner: he illustrates exactly the points that dan-level players need to learn in real game scenarios. The audience of this book are already familiar with the fundamentals taught in earlier parts of the series, and Hop's teaching technique not only explains advanced topics through real-life games, but also leaves the reader with the know-how for analyzing and learning new advanced topics from their own games.

Before reading the book, I would review my games from time to time, but O didn't always know what to look for in my games. The sheer number of examples that Hop goes through in his book gave me the practice I needed to learn how to review my games the right way - and to learn new things every time.

The icing on the cake is the joseki that Hop teaches yough throughout the journey of reading his book. Playing on a server like KGS, it's not uncommon to see the same kind of joseki time and time again. Hop refreshes the reader by showing new, state-of-the-art joseki that you don't often see in low-dan level games.

If you have no interest in improving your game, and if you don't want to push yourself to learn something new, don't read this book. But if you want to be a high-dan player, Hop's book can take you there. And, you'll have a fun time along the way!
