This fictional story honors the legacy of Iqbal Masih, a real boy who had escaped from a factory. Protected and educated, he worked to liberate child workers like Nadeem by the thousands. His work won him the ReebokYouth in Action award and special recognition at the International Labor Conference. When he returned to Pakistan after his trip, he was fatally shot while riding his bicycle. He was only twelve, but he had already made a difference in children’s lives all over the world.

It's not surprising that 12-year-old Iqbal Masih, the Pakistani carpet boy turned child-labor activist who was murdered in 1995, inspired works for older readers; a picture book on the same topic, though, raises the knotty question of age-appropriateness. As in Francesco D'Adama's novel for middle-graders Iqbal [BKL N 15 03], Shea alludes to the real tragedy through a fictional character, Nadeem, an indentured slave whose chance encounter with Iqbal, and later the news of Iqbal's death, galvanizes him to defy his master and lead the children in his workshop to freedom. Shea doesn't shy away from ugly realities ("coughing blood" and "cuts healed over with boiling oil"), and four dense pages of back matter, including sobering United Nations estimates of children in the global workforce, contrast tellingly with the unguarded optimism of the story's ending. Perhaps most useful for introducing the topic to groups older than the usual picture-book audience, this problematic yet thought-provoking picture book, with earth-tone watercolors brightened by decorative borders, will leave children asking questions that have no easy answers. One Persons Journey Through A World of Books Thoughts:

Occasionally I will open a book and be startled by what I am reading. My main character is Nadeem. He works in a carpet factory in Pakistan. His parents sold him into child labor three years ago and he now works seven days a week from dawn to sundown seven days a week.

And that is just page one.

At this point I go back and read the inside flap of the book and for the life of me cant recall knowing that this is what this book was about. And now, I am ashamed I took so long to review it as obviously there is an important message within these beautifully illustrated pages and as I read I try to imagine this book being read to or by those who the book is meant for - grades 3 - 6. It is making me take in a deep breath... what would an 8 year old think?

As the book goes on page by page I am witness to Nadeem's life, weaving rugs day in and day out with the occasional glimpse of the outdoors when he helps load the rugs onto the trucks.

While the story is fictional, it honors a real boy, Iqbal Masih who escaped from a child labor factory and through his work he was able to liberate thousands of child workers like Nadeem. Iqbah had been sold into child labor at the age of 4 where he wove carpet for 12 hours a day for six years until his escape. He learned about the laws against child slavery and began to work to help others. Iqbah's work won him the Reebok Youth In Action Award and recognition at the International Labor Conference. Upon Iqbah's return to Pakistan after these recognitions, he was fatally shot while riding his bicycle. He was only twelve at the time and he had already made an impact for children all over the world.

The book made me cry to think of all the injustice out there in this world. While my own children have been given choices all there lives, there are so many areas where this is not the case. I will treasure this book for years to come and every time I look at it on the shelf I will remember a boy I met within its pages called Iqbah.

Time for social justice

A very moving story of a boy working in a carpet factory who helps other children realize that they have options for improving the conditions under which they work. Children's version of a true story that ends in the murder of the boy. For children, the story ends before that and conveys the importance of people helping others to take risks to better their conditions in life. I bought it for my first grade granddaughter who is very concerned about others. We were also able to discuss geography of Pakistan and the surrounds.

A “BACKGKROUND FOR WOMANIST THEOLOGY”

Stephanie MItchem teaches religious studies at the University of South Carolina. She has also written Name It and Claim It?: Prosperity Preaching in the Black Church, African American Women Tapping Power And Spiritual Wellness, and African American Folk Healing.

She explains in the Preface to this 2002 book, “Simply put, womanist theology is the systematic, faith-based exploration of the many facets of the African-American women’s religiosity. Womanist theology is based on the complex realities of black women’s lives. Womanist scholars recognize and name the imagination and initiative that African American women have utilized in developing sophisticated religious responses to their lives. This book will give background for womanist theology. Both the objective visions of the theological enterprise and the subjective vistas of black women’s faith experiences become windows to a clearer understanding of womanist theology. Yet, as an introductory discussion, this text will not explain everything about womanist theology.” (Pg. ix)

She observes, “Womanist theology starts with analysis of roles assigned to African American women by their families and the dominant culture, the persistent stereotypes about black women, the combination of race with gender, and recognition of diversity among women. For black women to do this analysis is, in itself, empowering as we discover truths about ourselves.” (Pg. 23)

She states, “Womanist theology must draw from the meanings that already exist in black women’s lives. The lived theologies of individual black women cannot be dismissed as the empty activities of the ignorant. Womanist theologians recognize the richness of black women’s communal expressions of theology. These lived theologies become part of the womanist theological text.” (Pg. 49)

She points out, “Womanist theology becomes a center where all the ideas already raised have a home with safe space for discussion and discovery. Womanist theology is an opportunity to state the meanings of God in the real time of black women’s lives. Womanist theology explores the magic of black women’s religious meaning-worlds, in all the various forms… Womanist theology brings unstated assumptions about black women to a place where they can be explored, refined, and celebrated or debunked.” (Pg. 60)

She acknowledges, “[Patricia Hill] Collins’s comments on womanist thought indicate the complex discussions among black women scholars who seek to shape their disciplines and to name themselves in the process. Her comments bring into relief the reality that the lines of demarcation between black feminist and womanist are often blurred.” (Pg. 90)

She summarizes, “Womanist theology is focused on black women, analyzing the intricate layers of their lives. This focus aims to uncover the ordinary theologies that operate within black women’s lives and incorporate these ideas in womanist theological constructions… Ethical and social analyses of all forms of oppressions give definition to womanist theology. Ongoing dialogues with other perspectives are constitutive of constructions of womanist theology.” (Pg. 105-106)

She concludes, “Womanists generally view theology as ‘God-talk, a way of thinking that keeps the human dimension front and center. For womanists, God-talk must encompass both words and actions in divine-to-human and human-to-human contacts. This contrasts with the idea that theology can be a ‘study of God,’ a process that abstracts theology and blurs the lines of human activity. Womanist theology is a continuing project that participates in the ongoing, full human effort to refine God-talk.” (Pg. 143-144)

This relatively short book is an excellent introduction and overview to the subject, and will be of great help to those “new” to the subject, or wanting a “refresher” course.

About the Author
Senior Electrical Engineer who has worked for the past twenty years in the field of embedded control systems. He previously worked on Global Positioning Systems and secure communications equipment at Rockwell International, on document processing equipment at Banctec, and on medical electronics at Organon-Teknika. He has written several books and many articles for periodicals such as Circuit Cellar INK, and Modern Electronics.

Ed Ramsden is an electrical engineer who has been working with Hall effect sensors since 1988. His experience ranges from designing Hall effect integrated circuits to developing novel magnetic processing techniques. He has written over a dozen technical articles on sensor-related topics, and he holds four U.S patents in the area of magnetic sensor technology.

Prof Dogan Ibrahim graduated from the University of Salford with First Class Honours in Electronic Engineering. He then completed an MSc course in Automatic Control Engineering at the University of Manchester, and PhD in Digital Signal Processing at the City University in London. Prof Ibrahim worked at several companies before returning to the academic life. He is currently a lecturer at the Department of Computer Information Systems at the Near East University. Prof Ibrahim is a Fellow of the IET, and a Chartered Electrical Engineer. His interests are in the fields of microcontroller based automatic control, digital signal processing, and computer aided design.

This book covers the fundamentals of test and measurement including data acquisition, sensors, accelerometers and various computer instrumentation. About the Author
Kevin is Professor of Human Geography and is the School of Environment's Director of External Relations and the Faculty's Director of cities@manchester at the University of Manchester. He is a geographical political economist with interests in urban politics and policy on the one hand, and work and employment on the other. His current work explores urban policies to see where they come from, how they travel, where they end up and what these journeys mean for the cities the policies pass through. Theoretically, this involves rethinking what is meant by the urban in urban politics, as elements of different places are assembled and reassembled to constitute particular urban political realms. Methodologically, this involves doing fieldwork in a range of sites inside and outside of the cities that are the objects of study, literally seeking to reveal the circuits, networks and webs in and through which policies are moved. His co-edited book (with Eugene McCann) Mobile Urbanism: Cities and Policymaking in the Global Age (Minnesota University Press) was published in 2011. He is currently exploring the constitution of financial 'models' that have emerged in different areas of the world and that have been circulating as a means of funding infrastructure in the current economic condition.

PUT IN THE WORK AND GET THAT YES!!!

The Book of YES is not a book to be read, it is a book to be mastered. The book is divided into two parts, the first is a concise introduction to Kevin as a Yes Master and the second part are the scripts to be mastered. I didn't exactly know how and why it even mattered how these scripts worked. But, when you actually have a script role play session with someone and then you realize that the upswing and downswing of your voice really matter, you start to realize the one simple fact that PRACTICE IS EVERYTHING to get that successful listing. Kevin's scripts have carefully chosen words and phrases that would get you to that YES; then, he leaves it up to you to use your voice using those exact words and phrases and I think THAT is when this book really ADDS VALUE to any real estate agent's life.

The Tips and Tricks chapter tqught me how to do everythng much faster

The Help Me guide is excellent for someone just starting out with an iPhone becauseit helps you to set everything up and learn how to use the basic features. At least this is what I thought at first glance. I have used iPhone since iPhone 4 and didn't have high hopes for this book. Boy was I surprized to find many tips that even I didn't know. In addition, the Tips and Tricks chapter taught me how to do everything much faster.

An incredibly useful, well-organized book

This guy Charles Hughes knows what he's talking about. And he knows how to explain it clearly, even to technology idiots like me. One thing that impresses me is how thoughtfully Hughes has organized this book. One example: you don't have to flip through several pages to get to the Table of Contents. You just open the book, and there it is, the very first thing you see. He also provides very useful tables of contents, many of them. There are the overview TOCs, so you get the broad picture. Then there are the detailed TOC's, so you can find just what you're interested in. The pictures are clear and well labeled. The text is simple but exhaustive. The tips and tricks are useful. Just about any question you may have is answered in this book. Except, like, how do you achieve world peace, and what is the square root of pi? A really excellent guidebook.
