I have loved Edward Scissorhands since 1990 when the movie released

This graphic novel was not on my radar until I ran across it one evening in Barnes & Noble. I have loved Edward Scissorhands since 1990 when the movie released. Yes, it’s been that long. A quick flip through and I instantly became a fan of Drew Rausch. Seriously. He is that talented. His art style mixed with the colorists who worked on this volume set the tone of the story, but also the atmosphere of Edward Scissorhands so perfectly. I attempted to do a video review, but it became a fangirling episode rather than a critical look at the story and the graphic novel as a whole.

This story picks up decades after the movie so I would recommend watching the movie first if at all possible (recommended, but not necessary). We start by finding out a bit of what Edward has been up to and then we return to the Boggs family. In this all new adventure Megs goes digging in a storage locker after her mother refuses to visit her grandmother’s headstone. In a box she finds a bunch of stuff linked to Edward Scissorhands. When she presents the stuff to her mom, her mom encourages her to forget it. She reads her grandmother’s diary anyway and her curiosity gets the better of her. She goes to visit Edward Scissorhands. From there she finds out that Edward accidentally released a previously decommissioned experiment that is wrecking havoc on the neighborhood. Together with Edward Megs hunts down the heartless Eli.

Characters – the characters really come alive thanks to the amazing art of Drew Rausch. The facial expressions are hilarious. If you liked Edward Scissorhands in the movie you will like him in this story as well. Megs is the typical 16-year old outcast which fits perfectly with Edward.

Setting – same as the movie, quaint neighborhood

Plot – well thought out and planned, fast paced. Makes you want to find out what happens next.

Conflict – Edward brings to life a decommissioned experiment who ends up kidnapping one of the neighborhood children.

Resolution – With the help of Megs, Edward is seen as more than a monster.

Art – Fan-fricking-tastic! Seriously some of the best I have seen.

I loved this so much. Now I am completely invested in the series. Luck for me Volume 2: Whole Again releases Oct 22nd! Volume 1 gets 5 stars from me.

A really good sequel to the movie with really great art by Drew Rausch

'Edward Scissorhands Volume 1: Parts Unknown' by Kate Leth with art by Drew Rausch is a pretty great sequel to the movie.

The story picks up with the final scenes from the movie and moves ahead two generations. Kim (the character played by Wynona Ryder) has died after a long life, but her daughter and grandaughter still live nearby. Edward still lives in the house on the hill, and the people down below still think he's a murderer. When he is roaming the house one day, he makes a discovery. This leads to a mistake, and a new strange creature is unleashed on the town below, but is he gentle like Edward or more malicious?

Drew Rausch's art for this are perfect! There are even some nods to other Tim Burton works (I know I saw Oogie Boogie in there somewhere). I felt like the story was a perfect sequel to the movie, and I loved how it picked right up again. Edward is still as sweet and misunderstood as ever. I really liked this one.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to read this great graphic novel.

Set years and years after the movie...

Artwork: 5/5 stars. Like the movie, this book knows what should have a darker more gothic look and what should look bright and cheery. All of it is done in a cutesy way that just works. I cannot imagine any other artist / art telling this story any better.

Story: 3/5 As for the story, it’s just okay. Kim’s granddaughter confronts her mother about what happened so long ago. While the two fight, a new generation has emerged from the castle to cause fear in the townsfolk. It’s not bad, it just feels like it could have been more.

Overall a 4/5. It’s definitely for fans of the movie, but new fans could enjoy it as well (though they will only get a quick hint of the backstory).

Good Intro to Visual C++ development environment and MFC

This book was written to teach the reader how to use the Visual C++ for code development. That is, the book shows you how to use Visual C++'s auto code generation, resource editing, and code management features to quickly write programs that use Microsoft menus and code libraries.
Unlike a manual, each chapter in this book builds on the prior chapter. Early chapters explain in detail how to use various interface widgets to build simple dialog-based applications. Later chapters explain how to use these skills to build more complex applications.
In general, I had an easy time following the examples and learning the concepts. I was quite surprised how much I could do in so little time. Reading the book makes me appreciate the product much more than I had imagined.
Cautions: A few sections of this book appear as if written by a different author or at a different time (i.e., parts of Chapter 7). Here, vague and error-prone discussions are used in place of firm examples. At best, these chapters serve as clever puzzles to those who enjoy debugging other people's code. Others should ignore these small tidbits of non-information.

Great for the beginning C++ programmer

I read this book after working with VC++ for a year. This is a great way to be introduced to VC++. The book starts off with the really basic, Start -> Run, etc. , and progresses into areas complex enough for an experienced developer. Highly recommended for those starting off on the road to VC++ or for those who have been there for a while.

First I have to tell you my profile so you can find out if my comment 'works' for you. I am Delphi programmer for about 4 years, I used to program in C for dos, pascal and bit in assembly. By the time of programming in Delphi I got experience in API.
I wanted to learn Visual C++. Well, I am not total beginner, at least not at programming, but in Visual C++ I am beginner, the only thing I could do in VC is to write and compile a little DLL to be used in Delphi.
Here is my opinion about this book. Among these 7 books this one is the best is "Using Visual C++ 6". It is example how other books should be written.
So "Using Visual C++ 6" - is my pick. Here is why:
It has example for every basic control. Examples are very small, which makes you remember example, and you can understand it well. Some things are not explained in detail, which is also good approach - too much details at the moment you are about to learn most important basic is not good. Details come by the time.
Not only examples and explanations are excellent. Organization of book is very helpful. Every important chapter has its goal. Every important paragraph has little notes on margins. This helps a lot later when you go back to remind yourself about how to do something, then you can read the Margin Text.
After the explanation, author gives you the information where in the book you can find more about the matter. So If you are interested in details he directs you right there.
NO OTHER book has such organised way or teaching. I will not comment other books here, I just wanted to say that this one is the best. And off course I have to say THANKS to authors, and I wish they make many other good books as they did this one.

About the Author
Arna Skula is a clinical nurse specialist at the Children's Hospital in Reykjavik, Iceland, and has worked in pediatric nursing since 1978. For the last 13 years she has built up an outpatient clinic in Iceland for babies with sleep problems, which assists some 500 families a year. She is also an active researcher and teacher, and regularly contributes to media discussions on the welfare of parents and children.

Every parent, nanny, sibling and caretaker should be familiar and versed in how to identify, maintain and establish good sleep habits for babies. This is a well thought out, well researched masterpiece by an experienced and versed, pediatric nurse. The author fully explains the various sleep stages and how you can resolve sleep problems.

Skula also teaches you how these cycles develop and change as your baby grows. These are intricate, yet easy to understand.
Learning what healthy sleep cycles are, better prepares you for caring for you baby. . She walks you through the developmental patterns and then gives you the 1-2-3 steps to follow!
You learn and identify patterns so that you can put your child on a healthy sleep track.

This is volume 2 although for some reason Amazon does not clearly say so.

See my review for volume one for details, but the is an excellent book and a remarkable achievement. Unfortunately there are a number of typographical errors. These appear, believe it or not, to carry over from the Oxford edition.

An Unsurpassed Achievement of Scholarship and Research "70 Years On"

This magisterial three volume set is still the premier and definitive work on the dynastic, diplomatic, colonial, foreign policy and political descsion making of the European great powers and how their interaction, distrust and rivalry led to the 1st World War. Professor Albertini {who died in 1942} had access to scores of primary source documents that have since been destroyed {during WW11}and uniquely was able to conduct interviews with some of the protagonists including those former Serbian government and military officials that were personally responsible on arranging the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife.

The depth and detail of his writing and how he presents this immense subject makes these three {3} volumes a very challenging but ultimately rewarding read. His writing style is not boring but it is dense and complex and many of the government documents that he quotes in these volumes have to be read slowly/carefully to fully understand their meaning. I have the three {3} hardcover volumes printed between 1952 and 1957 and it took me over seven {7} years years of serious on and off reading to finish all 3 volumes - volume 1/ 578 pages, volume 2/ 686 pages and volume 3/ 702 pages - not including some 70 + pages of bibliography and footnotes.

These books are definitely not for the casual reader and prior knowledge of 19th and early 20th century European dynastic, economic and diplomatic history is essential before you attempt to tackle these very challenging reads. Books that I would recommend would be Willian L. Langers "European Alliances and Alignments 1871-1890" Paul Kennedy's "The Rise of the Anglo-German Antagonism", Edmond Taylor's "The Fall of the Dynasties", Barbara Tuchman's "The Proud Tower", Nial Fergurson's "The Pity Of War" and Fritz Stern's "Gold and Iron" are good "starting point" books to be read.

Mr. Albertini has his opinions - in general he is very sympathetic to Sir Edward Grey and British foreign policy, he gives a lot of "ink" to Italian foreign policy and the Mediterranean which are often peripheral and relatively minor in the big picture of European great power politics. He is very unsympathetic to Imperial Germany and her diplomatic maneuvering after the fall of Bismark and {sometimes unfairly} always suspects that Germany is being particularly devious and duplicitous compared to the other powers. Austria -Hungary, its policies and problems is chronicled in exhaustive detail with proper weight of the key role and position she had in the Balkans "vis a vie" Slav nationalism, Serbia and Russia.

The author writes and documents the pre 1914 European old world diplomacy, great power politics, what the European ruling elites were thinking ,saying and doing and details their sensible and the paranoid reasoning "side by side" with the sum of their fears - this work is the bedrock foundation for anybody interested in the root causes of World War 1. Reading the extensive documents that Albertini quotes at lenght {from all the powers} one can only be astonished at the mistakes and miscalculations of the sovereigns, diplomats and politicians - the total failure of the European diplomancy in 1914 to prevent catastrophe.

Albertini's verdict is that Imperial Germany was primarily responsible for the war or to phrase it differently - the most guilty party. This view was basically dismissed by historians in the 1960s, 70s and 80s - the prevailing opinion then was "group collective guilt" making all the powers equally responsible - but the latest historical research is strongly leaning back towards his view of Imperial Germany being the most culpable/responsible with which I am in total agreement. Still his research ensures that there is enough blame to "go all around". To the dedicated and knowledgeable reader of European history from 1815 to 1914 - I highly recommend each volume and give them 5 stars singularly and collectively.

Sunniva Heggertveit-Aoudia is currently working as a consultant, facilitator, mentor and coach (Certified Professional Co-Active Coach - CPCC, and Associate Certified Coach - ACC). She specializes within the areas of Diversity and Inclusion, working with large enterprises across Europe on activities such as reciprocal mentoring, inclusive leadership and cross-cultural intelligence. As a coach she works with medium-sized companies in Europe, as well as individual clients across three continents. Sunniva is also a volunteer member of the board in the Marseille-Provence chapter of the Professional Women's Network (PWN), where she has a 2-year role as Mentoring Manager. A Norwegian national, Sunniva lives with her French husband in Southern France. She has also lived and worked in Switzerland, Cyprus and the USA. A traveler at heart, she has visited numerous countries and continents, and continues exploring new places, enjoying the sights, the food and the differences.

This, the first volume of Medieval European Coinage, surveys the coinage of Western Europe from the fall of the Roman Empire in the West in the fifth century to the emergence of recognizable 'national' political units in the tenth. It starts with the Vandals, Visigoths, Burgundians and other Germanic invaders of the Empire, whose coins were modelled on contemporary issues of the Western or Eastern emperors. The coinage of the Franks is followed from early Merovingian times through to the establishment and subsequent fragmentation of the Carolingian empire. Italy is represented by the coinages of the Ostrogoths, Lombards, Carolingians and popes down to the Ottoman conquest in the mid-tenth century. The coinage of the Anglo-Saxons is traced from the introduction of minting in the early seventh century to the emergence of a united kingdom during the first half of the tenth century, including the aberrant coinages of Northumbria and the Anglo-Viking coinages of the Danelaw.

A bargain price for a great reference

In my book, "Astronomical Symbols on Ancient and Medieval Coins", I devote a number of chapters in the book to the astronomical symbols that were depicted on medieval European coinage as signs of divine right to sovereignty. As part of my research, I read numerous books on medieval European numismatics and history, and I found that Grierson's book, "MEC Volume I," was especially useful.

It is extremely difficult to find so many coins of the first half of the middle ages described in a single volume. There are many, many plates of photographs of coins, and also some plates showing forgeries.

This book was originally published as a hard back with a list price of $125, but was soon sold out and was going for almost $200 on secondary markets. I sold my first copy to a friend, and then found out how expensive it was to buy this book for a second time. Now that it is available as a paperback, the cost is once again more reasonable for obtaining a copy.

I highly recommend this book to all who are interested in European numismatic history.

Practical readable book

For such a complex period with so many cultures, it focus on each with great clarity, and even though I didn't expect so many catalogue pages there are plenty to illustrate the text. Bottom line, a "must have" for every numismatist, even those who are not familiar with the topic. Great work from Grierson and Blackburn.
