Very little has been written about America's own history of anti-Semitism. In this shocking book, the first documented examination of anti-Semitism in an American governmental institution, Joseph Bendersky shows that such racism permeated the highest ranks of the U.S. military throughout the past century, having a very real effect on policy decisions. Through ten years of research in more than thirty-five archives, the author uncovered irrefutable evidence of endemic and virulent anti-Semitism throughout the Army Corps from the turn of the century right up to the 1970s. This fully developed and clearly articulated perspective had a direct effect on policy discussions and decisions, affecting such matters as immigration, refugees, military strategy, and the establishment of Israel. Written with novelistic intensity and attention to intriguing detail, The "Jewish Threat" forces us to revise some of our cherished notions about our country and its most revered leaders.

Amazon.com Review
The "Jewish Threat" makes the dramatic allegation that, throughout most of the last century, rampant racism in the highest ranks of the United States Army helped to shape important American public policies. Historian Joseph W. Bendersky bases most of his arguments on documents from Military Intelligence Division (MID) files that "identified a myriad of [Jewish] institutions and individuals that could be drawn upon and formed into various malleable combinations when necessary." The MID, says Bendersky, used these files to build conspiracy theories positing Jewish plans for world domination. Between 1918 and 1941, hundreds of officers contributed thousands of entries to the MID subject files indexed under the heading "Jews: Race." Bendersky's readings of these documents allege that the Army's campaign against Jewish immigration to the United States in the 1920s was motivated by racism, and that racism in the Army's highest ranks helps to explain America's slowness in responding to the Holocaust. Vigorously argued and rigorously researched, The "Jewish Threat" will fascinate students of World War II and of American race relations. --Michael Joseph Gross
From Booklist
Bendersky, author of History of Nazi Germany (1985), spent 10 years researching this important history of anti-Semitism in the U.S. Army. He offers evidence that vicious anti-Semitism permeated the highest ranks of the U.S. Army from the turn of the century through the 1970s. He found that the Army's Military Intelligence Division (NM) created a separate classification for Jews to accommodate pertinent reports, memoranda, and correspondence. Bendersky also discovered letters between officers, secret agents, state secretaries, and embassies abroad, in which information on Jews was exchanged, including lists of prominent Jews who supposedly dominated or influenced German banking, industry, and politics. These Jewish files, Bendersky shows, reveal that an anti-Semitic worldview persisted in the army officer corps throughout World War II. Although the presence of anti-Semitism in the army has never been a secret, Bendersky's documented study reveals for the first time the extent of this insidious policy of Judeophobia. This is truly a significant work. George Cohen

An astounding achievement of academic documentation.
By Victor1212
"The Jewish Threat" is an impressive book and a badly needed achievement of academic documentation which meticulously details anti-Jewish behavior within the racially and religiously biased U.S. military prior to World War II.
The book illustrates the degree to which institutional prejudice within the military limited Jewish immigration to the U.S. and enabled the Holocaust and the pogroms which preceded it. I fully appreciate this important contribution to our society's collective knowledge as the son of a much decorated and much injured combat engineer.
My dad's unit fought its way across Europe from D-Day, when their gliders were mauled with great loss of life, to the Battle of the Bulge, when it also suffered great loss of life, and beyond. Of the 230 men in this oversized company when it arrived in England in 1943, less than 20 were still with it at the end of the War in Europe. My dad was one of them.
A hardhat diver, dad was blinded and deafened by mud near the end of combat operations in the European Theater. He suffered these injuries during the Battle of the Elbe River, while working underwater while under artillery fire on temporary bridge footings. He also suffered a separated shoulder.
Dad regained his sight after a few weeks, but never recovered his hearing.
He list of injuries includes several lost teeth which were knocked out of his mouth at the start of his military service simply because he was a New York Jew in the U.S. Army. As a 17-year-old boy, who was away from home for the first time, he was repeatedly beaten by older and larger comrades in his Georgia boot camp. He was also targeted for physical abuse afterward, when he joined an engineering unit comprised mostly of grown men who had been construction workers in Tennessee.
This abuse was so bad that a kindly officer sent him to unarmed combat school to enable him to defend himself.
The abuse should never have happened to this patriotic young American volunteer and those like him. The Jewish Threat helped me understand not only why it did, but that it was no accident. Because prejudice against Jews was rampant in the U.S. military in the 40s as dad had maintained all along.
I still recall my father, who passed in 2010, talking about the friction between the Southern drill instructors in his boot camp and the small number of young and vulnerable New York Jews entrusted to them.
One incident sticks in my mind and this book has inspired me to repeat it.
Dad told me that a New York Jew in his bot camp actually shot one of the most abusive DIs. Rather than arrest him, investigators classified the incident as a "training accident" to facilitate the subsequent murder of the suspect a few days later in a similar "training accident."
The young man's family was probably never told the circumstances of his death and it makes you wonder how many other young Jewish men were abused and dishonorably discharged for group traits they never sought during this period. Their only crime being a shared desire to defend a nation where they often were unwelcome.
All ethnic and religious distinctions fell to the side once his unit entered combat, according to my dad. He acquitted himself well enough to win four bronze stars and the friendship and respect of his fellow combat engineers.
He also had nightmares about the death of his friend "Whitey" until the day he died. Whitey was not Jewish and dad was wracked with guilt that his friend died a few days after pulling him from the Elbe River, while he was hospitalized.
He would growl "we gotta get the guy that got Whitey" though clenched teeth in his sleep until the day of his death at 85. As if he had been there when it happened.
I wish my Pops could have read this book. I think it would have given him some solace to know he was neither alone nor imagining the violent prejudice he encountered toward Jewish Americans.

An excellent book that ironically
By Carlos Abrigos
An excellent book that ironically, proves the complete opposite thesis than what the author is trying disprove! As with many books concerning the third-rail subject matter of Jews and their disproportionate influence and power, this one doesn't disappoint in that it uses much of their own words and actions as the most damming evidence.
The book is also an excellent look back into history before the sickening stench of PC had invaded the government and the military; for proof just read this book and then look at "our" govt today...

An important work
By J. A Magill
Much has been written recently about the previously unexplored history of racism in the US Army. My own favorite was "An Incident at West Point" though several books about the famed Tuskegee Airmen have also received wide praise. What has been given less attention is the history of anti-Semitism in the US Army. With this work, Joseph Bendersky, a noted history professor, ends that glaring omission.
Bendersky documents several layers of anti-Semitism in the US army, through most of the 20th century. In the early part of the century, it was reflected in opposition to immigration based on the belief that Jews represented a "bad and unchristian" element. Moving forward, the author exposes the army subscribing to such infamous anti-Semitic canards as the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" that argues for a world wide Jewish conspiracy whose goal is the destruction of Christianity.
These beliefs had great impact on American policy. A great example being General Marshall's opposition to the State of Israel, when he served in Truman's cabinet.
Many, myself included, will find the subject of this book disquieting. That is all the more reason that we are fortunate that an excellent scholar with meticulous attention to research and citations wrote this very fine work. It is an excellent source for those interested in the history of the Jews in America.
