This book is detailed, sophisticated, and surprisingly hip. I especially enjoyed the chapter on the blues as well as how the authors noted the effect of beat placement on harmonic choices. This sentence struck me: 'We can hear and feel a chord operating one way when it arrives, but our interpretation of that chord can also adjust retroactively.' The best jazz theory book I've studied (out of 20+) !!!

I must own 20+ jazz theory books. This book is at the top of my list in terms of clarity of exposition. I am a professor myself, so when I say clear and thoughtful, I mean it. I'd give them an A+ if they were in my course.
I am not a beginner musician, somewhere in the upper intermediate range. Caution: The book is not for the beginner. One needs to understand, to get through it, the various keys, scales, 7th chords, II V Is and more, etc, which most people that have played or taken lessons for 2-3 years probably do.
Then, this book does a fantastic job explaining how the various chords (dominant, for example) can be tweaked to make them more interesting and what substitutions work and which ones don't. Ditto for progressions and minor keys, etc. The flow of what and especially WHY is very clearly described, unlike most other books.
I don't write many reviews, but this one is so well written, I think others should know . . .

This book is better than yours

The reviewer above me stated that this new book is similar to 'The Chord Scale Theory and Jazz Harmony' by Barrie Nettles, Richard Graf. While not untrue, this book is makes CST obsolete.
CST was so eloquently writen, sort of like an exercise in reading coprehension. It's a great book, but you realy have to read between the lines, over and over again.
This new book is a real joy to read and easy to understand, yet much more evolved and expanded.
The language is clear and the explanations are far deeper so you won't be left with unanswered questions.
Btw, this is a theory text, Im not sure why the reviewer above me said it was practice orientated.

THE jazz harmony book to have

Although I have been a classical pianist for over 10 years, I have always had a desire to learn jazz. I've taken lessons from several teachers but have never been able to effectively grasp the concept of improvisation and harmonization. Improvisation in classical music is non-existent. With that being said, this book has been a life changer. It should be known that this book is definitely not for beginning musicians. Although it briefly goes over chords in the introduction, if you are brand new to music, I would not recommend this book. However, since I bought this book with some sort of background knowledge on music theory, it made it slightly easier to comprehend. This book is quite advanced and may seem tedious at times, but this is only because it goes into such great detail. Even though I was frustrated at times trying to grasp all the information, I stuck through it and learned so much. If I can go through this book from cover to cover, so can you!
